The GM Authority Take
We maintain that the decline in Regal deliveries is the result of two primary factors:
- A depressed climate for sedans, as consumers continue to choose crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) over sedans as a part of a market-wide shift in buying preferences, and
- The phase-out of the current, fifth-generation Buick Regal in favor of the all-new, sixth-generation Regal, resulting in the associated repercussions of reduced vehicle inventory/availability at the retail level
The Regal was handily the slowest-selling model in its competitive set in July, with sales volume being much lower than the Lexus ES and Acura TLX.

MODEL | JUL 17 / JUL 16 | JULY 17 | JULY 16 | YTD 17 / YTD 16 | YTD 17 | YTD 16 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
ES | +20.81% | 6,641 | 5,497 | -14.82% | 28,441 | 33,390 |
TLX | -20.13% | 2,495 | 3,124 | -2.16% | 21,560 | 22,037 |
REGAL | -62.12% | 874 | 2,307 | -36.37% | 7,356 | 11,560 |
TOTAL | -8.40% | 10,010 | 10,928 | -14.38% | 57,357 | 66,987 |
We expect the all-new Regal to generate higher interest from the marketplace, thereby resulting in sales volume gains when it goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2017. However, the market’s seemingly-insatiable thirst for crossovers could hinder the sales potential of the new model.
About Buick Regal
After six years on the market, the current fifth-generation Regal is showing its age. Luckily, an all-new, sixth-generation model is on the way, as Buick revealed an all-new Regal in April at the 2017 New York Auto Show. The new model will be available in two body styles — a four-door, sedan-like liftback called the Regal Sportback and a ruggedized wagon called Regal TourX. The all-new Regal shares the E2 platform, design, and most features with the 2017 Opel Insignia, 2018 Vauxhall Insignia, and 2018 Holden Commodore.

Comments
Thank you for comparing the sales to other vehicles in the segment.
The black plastic slug in place of a rear side window in the upcoming Sportback, brings back memories of cheaply made Buicks of the 1990’s. If you can’t even get the simple things right, don’t even bother to build the car. The new Regal, or rather Opel, will be an inconsequential offering in a field of other vehicles with better perceived quality. Maybe both models will achieve about 1,000 sales a month.
But what if said black insert is a high-quality? 🙂
The last Cruze had it too. Would have been nice to have a vanity window back there though.
It is now October and no sign of the new Regal yet at any dealerships. What is taking them so long to get this thing out?
