Particular Chevrolet Bolt EV Interior Combination Shown To Create Blinding Window Glare

There may be a very unfortunate problem for some 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EVs and it’s only now being discovered.

So the story goes, according to The Truth About Cars, Bolt EVs specced in Premier trimmings with the Light Ash Gray interior motif are plagued by near-blinding dashboard reflections. The angle of the windshield—combined with the light gray dashboard color—reflects the light gray color back and creates significant glare on sunny days. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received two complaints surrounding the issue.

Furthermore, it’s a well-known issue now. Bolt EV owners have discussed the interior glare problem at length on forums and many have resorted to makeshift remedies to ensure a safe driving experience. A sample of how intense the glare can become may be seen below.

Owners have draped black cloths, matte decals and dashboard carpets to keep the glare to a minimum. One owner took matters into his or her own hands and had a dealership install a dark gray dashboard to the tune of $2,500. Bolt EVs outfitted with any other interior finish are not plagued by the issue.

GM has been contacted for comment but has not released a statement on the dashboard glare as of this writing.

  1. Barra – don’t save money on testing. Instead, save money by not wasting the GM CEO’s time on political ‘panels’. Remember in 2009 when Ford/Chrysler/GM CEO’S were summoned to congress, they flew to D.C. from Detroit, and were criticized for “wasting money on flying” but then they proved that because of their ‘hourly rates’ it was actually cheaper for them to fly for an hour than drive for a day.

    I remember that.

That means your time on this ‘political panel’ is costing GM mega$$$. Stop it now.

Take those millions and use them to pay test drivers instead of AVGAS bills.

  2. Like I’ve been saying forever now…Chevrolet needs to stop offering Hard plastic upper panels on all of their dashes. Its extremely embarrassing in 2017. None of their competitors do this but Chevrolet.
The crazy thing is that design wise, their interiors are a Home run but then they go all cheap on the materials especially the upper portion of the dash which is literally what every potential customer touches every single time at the dealership. Its insane actually.

    1. You are correct. There is a Vice President of Vehicle Production Mediocrity responsible for taking good designs and reducing them to look and feel and even smell as cheap as possible. The department is quite successful from Chevrolet to Cadillac. No matter that customers realize the lack of quality and buy elsewhere, the goal is to de-content GM vehicles as much as possible and still mostly hold together during the warranty period.

    1. When you are driving at 70+ mph and you suddenly cannot see out of the windshield this becomes a safety issue. The picture in this article is a relatively minor example.

      1. Then that is on you for not test driving the car with that color combination during the day to see if there will be any problems!

Then when those cars with that color combination sit on the lots unsold then GM will delete the option

Why won’t people take responsibility for their purchases instead of blaming it on the manufacture?

  4. I own a 2014 Elantra , mine does the same thing and I am fairly certain this has been happening to cars & trucks since the dawning of time. (get it, “dawning of time” , ha)

  5. Doesn’t look that bad to me. I’d still drive one.

  6. This is not limited to the premier trim. I own the base model Chevy Bolt (white) and there have been several occasions when I lost all visibility out of the windshield.
