The Opel Astra continues to rack up awards, and this time, the car’s turbocharged 1.6-liter “whisper diesel” four-cylinder engine was at the forefront.
The Astra and its diesel powertrain walked away with the “Best Economical Diesel” of 2017 accolade, which left the BMW 520d and Mercedes-Benz E 220d in second and third place, respectfully.
There was another winner among the bunch, too: the Opel Ampera-e. The electric car took home second place in the “Best Electric Car” category. The Ampera-e offers 520 kilometers on a single charge, per the NEDC.
“We are delighted with these knowledgeable readers’ verdict. With this, our Astra wins another major award after it already captured the European “Car of the Year 2016″ as well as 13 national ‘Car of the Year’ titles,” says Jürgen Keller, Opel Executive Director Sales, Marketing and Aftersales Germany.
Fun fact, the 1.6-liter diesel engine found in the Opel Astra also powers North America’s Chevrolet Cruze diesel. With its awards, it’s worth taking a look at the diesel-powered Cruze.
