The GM Authority Take

The drop in Sierra sales during the previous four months is concerning, given the numerous incentives offered by GMC, which included a discount of 15 percent from the MSRP on select Sierra 1500 models. In comparison, sales of the Ford F-Series were up 9.8 percent to 77,895 units, while FCA’s Ram Pickup saw sales volumes increase 4.8 percent to 43,073 units during the month.

We assert that the decrease in Sierra deliveries in recent months is the result of the vehicle being the oldest in the full-size truck segment, decreasing its competitiveness and, therein, overall appeal to consumers. A decrease in sales of vehicles on GM’s K2 platform, as is the case for the Sierra, can lead to a decrease in GM profits, which are highly dependent on U.S. sales of high-margin pickup trucks and SUVs. That said, the The General’s profitability might not take a hit if it is selling less of these vehicles at a higher profit margin.

Whatever the case may be, a replacement for the current K2-based Sierra is expected to launch for the 2019 model year. See more info on the 2019 GMC Sierra.
