GMC Canyon Sales Drop 26 Percent To 2,516 Units In June 2017

Cumulative GMC Canyon sales decreased in the United States and increased in Canada during June 2017.

GMC Canyon deliveries in the United States totaled 2,516 units in June 2017, a decrease of 26 percent compared to 3,398 units sold in June 2016. In the first six months of 2017, sales of the mid-size pickup truck decreased 14.3 percent to 14,888 units.

In Canada, GMC Canyon sales increased 10 percent to 582 units in June 2017. In the first six months of the year, sales of the midsize truck increased 7.4 percent to 2,792 units.

The continued decline in cumulative U.S. Canyon sales volume continues to surprise us given the nameplate’s highly-impressive sales performance since the launch of the second-generation Canyon in 2015. As in the past, we attribute the decline in Canyon deliveries to the GMC Sierra eating into Canyon sales, as incentives on the full-size Sierra have been very lucrative in recent months, including in May and June, but highly limited on the Canyon.

The Canyon was also one of two vehicles to see cumulative sales volume fall in June, with the second being the Nissan Frontier. The results place the Canyon in last place in its competitive set by a wide margin — behind the first-place Toyota Tacoma, the Canyon’s twin — the Chevrolet Colorado, and the Nissan Frontier. Despite the low sales volume, we have a feeling that the Canyon is likely the transaction price champion in the segment — as its range-topping Denali trim level can hit the $50,000 range.
