Chevrolet will kindly remind truck aficionados the Colorado ZR2 is smaller, lighter and more nimble than a Ford F-150 Raptor, but the two trucks accomplish very different things.
The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is a formidable rock crawler; the F-150 Raptor is a sand-dune shredding monster. While Chevrolet puts all of its off-road eggs in a ZR2-sized basket, Ford may be looking to outgun the bowtie brand further. Sources have told Ford Authority there’s much potential for a Ford Raptor Super Duty and it is, indeed, on the table.
Pickup trucks are hot right now and expanding the Raptor name to a larger truck—with even greater payload ratings—could be just what the market ordered. A potential Raptor Super Duty may also complete a 1-2-3 punch of off-road trucks—Ford is also said to be readying a Ranger Raptor to take on the Colorado ZR2.

Silverado Raptor rival
If and when a Raptor Super Duty comes to light, surely it will have the folks at Chevy Trucks pondering a response. The Z71 package is just fine for everyday use, but the market is yearning for more.

An SD Raptor would have to be gas powered to be a “dune shredding monster”. Diesels don’t have the rpm capability for that. Could they turn it into a rock crawler? Absolutely.
Come on GM. Get your head out of the sand and give customers what they want. Granted, it is a small market but it is VERY profitable.
Tell that to Rod Hall Racing. i do believe back in the day they won the baja 1000 with a diesel powered H1.
Seriously? A purpose built race engine is not what we are talking about here.
The Corvette is a HALO car and helps carry sales in other Chevy lines. Ford brought in the Raptor as a HALO truck and it works. There are trickle down sales throughout the company as a result. GM BIGTIME asleep at the wheel with these. It’s nothing new either!! The Raptor has been around for awhile. Absolutely ridiculous that GM has no answer.
Since GM still owns the name HUMMER they should stick HUMMER badges on Colorado, Tahoe, Silverado light and heavy duty trucks.
These new HUMMER badges could be applied on fenders, grills, tailgates, hoods, dash and on additional accessories.
This way, GM would still make money from their HUMMER name instead of wasting it for the past 7 years doing nothing with it.
GM produced HUMMER badges only cost a few cents to make in volume and can add thousands of additional dollars worth of value to each vehicle they are applied to.
When people on the streets see the HUMMER badges on a Silverado for an example, they will automatically think it’s an up fitted, high end vehicle meaning better profits and resale values for all involved.
Thanks!
What a terrible idea, just stick some badges on an otherwise unaltered vehicle. If Ford brings this to market the only competitor it will have is the Ram Power Wagon which is an awesome truck.
Sounds like it would need to be more of a competitor to the Ram Power Wagon, rather than a larger, heavier, less useful 3/4+ ton Raptor. As mentioned above, definitely more into rock crawling than dune running.
I’m a Chevy guy but I really like how FORD does business! Quick to challenge the ZR2 with a Ranger Raptor! Chevy is taking their sweet time to push out a real FULL Size Raptor Killer aka “Avalanche” remade! This reminds of when the Mustang came in years earlier than the Camaro and just flooded the market with Stangs because of Chevy’s dragging ass! They must be waiting for another bailout!
