Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Owners Complain Of Shaking At Highway Speeds

“The seats start vibrating, the floorboard vibrates – it feels like a wheel’s out of balance”. That’s how Mike Hollingsworth describes driving his 2016 Chevrolet Silverado, reports KSHB.

The retired Kansas resident spends most of his time traveling in his truck, and says he gets nervous when driving on the highway since the vehicle rattles, making him wonder if the truck is going to break down The condition earned it the “Chevy Shakerado” nickname.

Hollingsworth bought the Silverado new and states that the shaking began within weeks of driving it off the lot. Since he bought it new, he didn’t take it for a test drive, which he now regrets not doing.

Hollingsworth took his Silverado to the dealership where he purchased it. The store’s service department tested the truck, and the technicians said that the amount of shaking was within an acceptable range for the vehicle.

“I get to drive a truck that shakes,” says Hollingsworth. He told KSHB that he recently took his truck back to the dealership, at which point an employee drove with him on the highway and recognized that the truck does, in fact, shake. It isn’t clear what will be done to fix the issue.

The GMC Sierra is also report to have shaking issues at highway speeds

Other owners of GM’s trucks on the GMT-K2 platform — model year 2014 and newer Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra — report having the same experience as Hollingsworth. Various publicly-available videos show the trucks exhibiting similar behavior. One such customer is Bill Burdette, whose YouTube video shows him driving his truck on the highway while his keys rattle and water visibly vibrates in the cupholder.

There have also been various complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). One customer states that his truck has been at the dealer for over two weeks with no tangible outcome.

Another owner wrote, “This truck has vibrated since day one. It has been at the dealer for over 17 days. The tires were balanced and the dealer informs me at this point that the truck falls into what GM finds acceptable.”

Another owner reports having his truck at the dealer nearly a dozen times without any results.

“I’ve been dealing with the same vibration issue since November 2015, it is now March 2017. It has been in the shop 10 times without any results.”

It is unclear whether the issues are limited to models with certain engines, transmissions, axles or other configurations. GM has so far been mum on the matter.

My 2014 Silverado as a vibration, too. Had wheels balanced at dealer twice in first 20k miles. Took truck to tire shop and one of 17″ factory steel wheels was total whacked out. Out of round and didn’t run straight either. Shop said Bridge stone Duelers are junk tires. Very sensitive to tire pressure.

I run 35lbs in them and with 36000 miles they still have 10 to 12 32nds left… All hi way driving, even at 120 plus they run true and no shaking at all… Seeing the All Terrain come with RANCHO struts and shocks, I did the front leveling spacer, and upgraded the rears to RANCHO 9000’s set on the 5 setting…
Not only did I fix the shaking problem, I also changed the personality of my truck to boot….

Just off the phone with GM Executive Office..they say the vibration with my 2015 Silverado is a “Characteristic”
of the truck..nothing they can do to fix it..I say bull anyone who has this problem we need to get it out there that GM knows the problem exist..so they should let the consumer know before they buy..If it’s a Characteristic of the vehicle then it should be on the Sticker just like all the other Characteristic’s are EX: Mileage..Options..Seating etc… No longer a GM guy unless GM steps up and makes this right. There is a “Facebook” Chevrolet Vibration use it to pressure GM to do something

This is a very well known issue and is referred to as the Chevy Shake. Our dealership has seen it on trucks with a 143.5″ wheelbase (double cabs and Crew short boxes). We’ve tried almost everything from rims, tires, drive shafts to universal joints and both body and engine mounts. It improves with some of these changes but never truly goes away. And a moderate fix on one truck has no affect on another truck. So it is a design flaw.

GM is very aware of this issue as they have even bought back some vehicles already if the customer pushes hard. The engineers are saying it is within normal vibration specs, but if it actually was, they wouldn’t have authorized dealership to try so many different fixes. Personally I think GM will stay mum on this issue until the new truck comes out and they hope this goes away slowly as owners trade in their shakin’ Chevys.

Unfortunately this issue is getting around and customers are talking about it when looking at our trucks, and we’ve lost customers who have traded their shakin’ Chevys in on Fords and Rams because GM has no fix.

This is one of the three reasons I haven’t traded my 2013 Silverado for a current generation. The other two reasons are the wax coated frames (my 2013 with 22,000 kms which sits in a garage and never moves has had the “fix” done as the pieces were falling onto my garage floor – but the fix just slows it down) and a lack of a 6.2L in an cloth truck.

Well that shit they used on my frame has come off and started to show RUST just from normal conditions, not much rain driving either….. Dealer told me that it only on there for storage and shipping, what the fuck???????? But than again, $50,000 doesn’t by anything worth a shit these days I guess…. Next they’ll blame the car wash I go to that has the chassis wash watch…..

True that. Add AC condensers that go out all the time as another reason not to buy one, failing injectors, also no real rear headrests in a $50k vehicle, you can’t get this anywhere else … in a world in which Toyota, Ford and others are real options, GM truck buyers need their heads examined.

Sorry but I don’t need my head examined. I’ve owned F350s, F250s, F150s, the Silverado and multiple Sierras. The bottom line? My 2016 Sierra is by far the best truck I have owned. The 6.2 is a monster and gets great fuel economy. It tows everything I ask of it and it is smooth as silk. With that, I have no doubt that people have experienced vibrations. My last F250 would rattle your fillings out and the dealer couldn’t find a single thing wrong yet my buddies truck was damn near perfect. In any event, I’ll be buying another on in the future…

okay I am new here but I have a 2017 Silverado with 43,000 miles it has fallen victim to the 70 miles per hour vibration it has P275/55R20 Goodyear eagles I had the tires balance didn’t change anything I know if I take it to the dealership they are going to tell me it’s the tires. I guess that’s possible but sure feels like a driveline vibration (tires would be an expensive guess) not sure where to start

No need to examine heads (Magirus being dramatic again). GM makes a good truck, just one that randomly has a vibration. And let’s not blow it out of proportion; not every truck has this issue. It is the vast minority of them that are experiencing this issue. But it is very frustrating to those who have it.

Injector and AC condenser problems are again, issues blown out of proportion. GM’s have no more issues with the current engines than Ford has with theirs. Toyota is over priced for what you get (lack of safety features, still a weaker frame, and butt ass ugly nose).

Perhaps a harmonic balancer is in question. I have a 2017 LTZ Black widow edition with a factory installed 6″ Fab tec lift. I have a shaking problem between 48- 54 miles an hour and only when the truck is under torque. If I’m coasting down a hill or just coasting down from say 60 to 40 with my foot off the gas there is no vibration. To me this eliminates the rims, tires,. Its a driveline problem. So if its happening under torque it has to be driveshaft, transmission, rear end. I am lost and I am going to begin my quest to get Chevy to repair it. For $74,000 this thing is driving me crazy.

My ’03 had (until I sold it) and my ’13 (both Silverado, 4X4, 5.3 litre motor, different transmissions though) has a mild case of of shaking at highway speeds. It doesn’t matter what tires (summer, winter, new, old, on road, off road) I have on at the time, but I find that the quality of the pavement makes a big difference. The worst seems to be new pavement, I don’t know if the pavement packers have vibrators on them, but the shakes are sometimes the worst on newly/recently paved roads, they are not as smooth as a new road should be. Not overly objectionable on mine, and nothing has broken yet.

I have a 2016 Silverado that listed at near $60,000 and it has the “shakes” bad. It also shifts extremely hard at times and shakes a vibrates going up long hills at highway speeds. I have taken it to the dealer and they tell me that they can find nothing wrong, noting that it could be the way I drive with the way I accelerate. That to me is crazy, I have been driving for 55+ years in a multitude of vehicles and have NEVER had one that acts the way this truck does. My wife even has said “are you running out of gas” because of the way the truck was running. I certainly am fed up with it, and sick about the money I spent for a vehicle that is inferior!!!!

Yep I am in the shaking club. Alignments, rims, tires, wasted more than 100 hrs of my own time taking it to different places. The dealer ingnors any problem you have. The steering column makes noise when turning they can’t hear it. The truck shakes at 71 to 80 they can’t drive that speed. It is complete crap because the truck is beautiful and bad ass 4×4.

If I was a journalist, I would ask the owner of the truck for a test drive to experience what he was experiencing then go to the same dealership to test drive a new truck especially as one of the owners said of having experienced the issue from Day One; I would also take the truck to someone I considered as being an expert mechanic who could diagnosis what might be the cause of the problem and what might be necessary to fix.

A friend of mine said that the shaking comes from GM taking too much material out of the chassis and frame in attempt to shave weight. That would explain the lack of a solution and response to the issue. My 2010 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab (2WD) has had no vibrations that I can remember.

They didn’t do anything to take weight out the frame as it is within a couple pounds of what the previous gen frame weighed. But it does have more ultra high strength steel in it. I wonder if the stronger the steel, the more it exaggerates vibrations from the road up into the rest of the chassis?

Does no one take a decent test drive anymore?

I have not looked but it looks like the crew short bed is the problem. Is it a on piece or two piece drive shaft? That my be the issue if the shaft is flexting.

We built a street rod once and found the shaft would flex more than you would thing.

We put in a carrier bearing and it was gone.

Many times a salesperson will just tell the customer it needs a wheel balance (as sometimes even new vehicles have an unbalanced rim/tire. So they buy the truck and bring it back a few days later to have it done and find out it doesn’t fix the issue.

The majority of the ones I know out have said it develops shortly after they buy it (usually within the 5000-10,000 kms mark). That is why GM first figured it was tires or an alignment/balance issue.

I will speak with our shop foreman who has been working with GM engineers on this issue to see if that is a fix for this vibration, as there have been other vibration issues that have developed which are different from the one in the story. (much less common issue)

I have had the torque converter replaced on my 2017 Silverado High Country and also had the newest fix which is a flush and fill with a new type of fluid. They say that I need to wait 400-500 miles to see if it fixed it but I can tell you as soon as I hit 70mph the truck is shaking something awful. The passenger seat is very animated and loud.

In my experience GM vehicles have always had some vibration issues. And I personally have dealt with the newer GM truck vibration complaints. It only makes sense that many newer vehicles are sensitive to road imperfections due to the massive wheel/tire combos they are running these days. But I’ve often wondered if it is just powertrain NVH that engineers simply just didnt worry about? Who knows cause there are a ton of variables at stake.
I’ve owned several RWD cars and full size trucks where I have noticed when its in a direct drive gear (1:1 ratio) and the torque converter is locked…you could feel vibrations through everything (seat, cupholder, etc.). But yet when you shift to a different gear or go to a different speed the problem goes away.
So one has to wonder…do they even balance the driveline/engine assembly like some manufacturers?

This isn’t rocket science on a basic pick-up truck chassis. I have several cars/trucks and none vibrate at over 100mph. Any competent mechanic or engineer should be able to get to the bottom of this.

Yea Buddy, Mine doesn’t vibrate over a buck and a quarter either, now at 37000 it just started at 70mph to about 78mph… Now I take very good care of my tires by getting them rotated and balanced at every 5000 miles, and keep them at 35 lbs, and I’m hoping to get 300,000 miles out of mine, lol Seriously, I mark my wheels and keep records on where they are and where they are rotated to plus the weight amounts if changed…. Still acts like a wash machine at 70 mph now….. God I hope they don’t fuck up the new design of the 2019’s, that will KILL GM truck sales for real….. Just read all these comments, and how many of us are waiting a year for the 19’s, to pay by than $60,000 or more for a1/2 ton wash machine…….
Another thing, if the 6 speed transmission or converter is the cause, I’ll be at my dealer in the morning to find out, than MAYBE hold off on the EIGHT and TEN speed transmissions…. I don’t want or understand why an 8 speed let alone a 10 speed, in a 1/2 ton…. My 6 speed works damn good with what I do with my little 5.3 after getting used to the 1/2 throttle and full throttle down shifts….. Love the shift now that I programed them to 25% over, and some other adjustments when it breaks the ass loose when it shifts from 4th to 5th at over oh lets just say the speed limit for now…

The shake occurs most often on vehicles with the Bridgestone Dueler Alenza 285/45R22 tires. Other tire brands are less prone to the shake, but some sets still can shake at 55 to 75 mph.

Some owners on another website have found driveshafts with too much runout. Replacements had the same problem. A custom made driveshaft cured the vibration. I am considering this option but hate to spend $500 to find out if that will fix it. I agree, a qualified technician should be able to find the root cause of the issue.

I returned a 14 Sierra 2 wheel drive after 3 months and 3 grand on the clock…. Seeing I have been a good customer for some time at my GMC/BUICK dealer, they bought it back after I complained about how badly it did the same shaking at 70mph plus…. As I told everyone there from the service department, to the big bosses, and even the owner himself about it, and as I explained to them that I wasn’t happy about it, when I paid so much for that OVER PRICED pickup to start with….
Seeing it was only 2 wheel drive and a very loaded SLE, I wasn’t that happy about owning it either….
They told me that they thought it was because of the 20’s and 275×55’s, so we took another set off a new truck on the lot and there was no difference….
So long story short, I up graded to a SIERRA ALL TERRAIN and sure glad I did….. They even gave me a great deal, seeing how much they wanted to keep my out of a FERD, or RAM”S ASS….
The only complaint I have in the 35 grand on the clock now, is the way that lousy light weight hood LIFTS when I get her wound up in the THREE didgets , when I get the chance to kick ass on the competition….
Was going to trade her in on a 2017, last month, but It would have cost me a few grand to DOWN GRADE…. The 16’s and 17’s don’t offer the chrome package, or the 20’s either…. My 14 is loaded and seeing the only differences on the 17’s is the Grill and front bumper, and oh yes the led tail lights, so I didn’t see any reason to trade mine for a lessor truck.. I have all my lights up graded to ANZO LEDS including the steps, and the cap on my tailgate and 3rd brake light…. Up front I have all LEDS 7000k fogs and headlights, as well as a 34 inch light bar behind the grill… I decided to wait for the 2019’s to come out next fall 2018…. From what I’ve seen and heard so far about the 18’s nothing new on them either….

Our dealership shop foreman’s 2014 Sierra DC All-terrain has this issue. He has tried many things with the help of GM engineers. Here’s what he’s concluded: (his opinion)
    – there are multiple factors affecting the degree of vibration a truck has
    — tires (off-road tires are causing more vibration, as do 10-ply tires when compared to regular P-series tires)
    — drive train angles (when he puts a little weight in the back of his truck so it squats a couple inches, no vibrations at all)
    — Ultra-high strength steel frame (the hardness of that metal really accentuates any vibrations from the tires/road into the cab)
    — body mounts (the hydraulic body mounts are really hard and again, can accentuate vibrations
    — drivetrain alignment (affects balance and angles)

Overall, he had concluded it is a total design issue and that is why GM has no real fix for it; they would have to start from scratch with a re-design (hence waiting until the redesigned 2019’s).

GM did a great job at designing each component, and tested individual components really well; they just missed testing the entire package really thoroughly with all the parts put together. Either that, or they discovered and knew about it at test/release time but couldn’t find a solution (because they’d be starting over) and decided to live with it for this generation.

I thought it was the tires I installed until my mechanic who has a stock 2016 Identical truck same problem. I called my dealer today & spoke to the service mgr. and what he told me I was experiencing was from the 8/6/4 part of the engine. When you excellerate , especially under a load it is looking to place the engine in the correct mode & until it does that the vibration takes place . I have been researching and apparently it’s a major problem with Ford also. Taking it in tomorrow for probably the same runaround that GM owners are getting. At least I’ll know my tires are in balance.

I’ve had 2 different issues between a shutter and a constant vibration at highway speeds on my 2016 Sierra the shuttering that would come and go was fixed with a transmission flush GM has a bulletin for flushing out the transmission, flushing out the cooler lines, and replacing the transmission filter. Problem with shuttering solved. The constant vibration I had was due to excessive road force on the tires apparently these trucks are very sensitive to anything over 12lbs of road force per tire after replacing 3 of the tires on the truck to get all tires under 12lbs of road force the truck drives like it should and I have no complaints of any vibration what so ever one note I have to say about the bridgestone duelers I believe they are made with nylon when the truck sits for a while the tires get a flat spot that goes away after the tires heat up on the highway after that everything is smooth. I suggest anybody having vibration issues other than the shuttering I mentioned covered by the dealer find a good shop that is good and will take the time and knowledge that it needs to road force these tires and you won’t be disappointed

Maybe the reason I don’t have any problems with my 14 is because those cheap factory Bridgestones are still mounted on the 20’s that came on my ALL TERRAIN, and are sitting in storage with only 150 miles on them…. I’ll put them back on when I get rid of the truck, like I always do….. NOW, I have my 20 inch wheels on it now which are the same size 9inch, and same back space as the stock wheels… I also did the leveling kit in the front, and went to 305×55’s instead of the 275’s….. I also only run COOPER’s AT3’s, and they get balanced and rotated every oil change, 5000 miles at American Tire stores…. I live in the high Desert between L.A. and Vegas, where it’s over 100 degrees as I type this…. The Coopers are quiet, smooth, handle as good as expected, don’t loose any air (nitrogen) 35lbs, and I drive not only on pavement, freeways, sand, some mud, and mountain SNOW… Even in 4 wheel AUTO, I have not had any problems and there are a couple guys that drive the completions lifted but useless trucks that I’ve pulled out of some tuff spots in snow and in sand to back me up….
Like I mentioned earlier, we tried different wheels and tires at the dealer, they were the same as what were on my truck to start with, which made me think it was the JUNK tires that come from the factory, and I AM RIGHT, it was the tires….
Seeing I have 34,000 miles of shake and vibration free miles on them, and NO flat spots either…. The Rancho Struts and shocks (replaced rears with 9,000’s set on the 5 setting) might be a reason for the good handling and smooth for a 4×4 ride over the normal factory shocks that GM puts on their HIGH DOLLAR Trucks…..

I found out something interesting about the high speed shaking…
I was told to drop a gear one at a time when the shaking starts, mine does between 80mph to about 86mph…
I dropped down to 5th, it got worse, down to 4th even worse than 5th, than down to 3rd, my GOD I thought everything was going to come out and pass me…. My 3rd will hit 111mph at 6 grand, so 80mph is nothing for it to do…
OK HERES WHAT I WAS TOLD BY SOMEONE THAT DOESN’T WORK FOR GM, AND HAS BEEN IN THE TRANSMISSION BUSINESS FOR OVER 50 YEARS….
HE FOUND OUT THAT IT’S IN THE TORGUE CONVERTER…
TORGUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SHUDDER, #16—NA—-175 CHUGGLE …. I did some digging and It made a lot of since… To the dealer I go for my next free oil change, and will be getting a rental car until they replace mine..

Well you’re not going to get away from your GM, because remember the new 10-speed transmission was developed between GM and Ford plus Ford’s past history new products coming out has never been very good Personally I’m not ready to drive an aluminum can! I traded in a Dodge Ram for a new GMC, I have to say I’m very happy with my choice. I didn’t trust the ram anymore and I certainly do not trust any Fords or too many bad stories about them. Like my mechanic tells me, if it wasn’t for Fords he wouldn’t have a job!

I believe this shake, rattle and roll is due to the new platform, this started in 2014 when GM rolled out the K2XX. My take is that certain things like convertors along with certain size tires, shocks, type of cab, etc, etc, influence the amount of vibration that occurs. In 2019 GM will introduce a new platform and this should provide a fix. I was ready to purchase a GM Sierra until I read all the problems on a GM Forum and noticed a shake during a test drive. 20 % off MSRP and a 4K private offer and I still refused to purchase what could have been a nightmare.

There is a very very simple fix to this issue, if you want a smooth comfortable ride buy a car. Trucks are meant for work cars like Cadillac’s, Mercedes Benz and BMWs are meant for comfort. I own 2 3/4 ton pickups they are very rough unless you have a bit of weight in the back. if you want a truck because they look ‘cool’ don’t buy it, buy it because you need to move stuff and do work with it. I’m sick of all you City folk complaining about nothing you have the right to. If you don’t tow or haul regularly buy a car not a truck.

Sorry about that barn yard kitt’n…… If you need a truck for all work and NO play, than those 3/4 tons are what you need and if you don’t mind selling off the kids to afford them…. But when you spend more on a 1/2 ton pickup than you would on those NERD cars you mentioned, the last thing we need is to bounce and shake all over the road….. To bad about the misses gets those headaches, that’s what Sheep are for I’ve been told….. Besides this is 2017 not 1957, you could have bought a whole dealership full of no frills, rough riding 3/4 ton trucks for the price of a new one today….
Call me old school, but paying between $50 and $60 grand for a 1/2 ton pickup today should be against the law, not to mention expecting to have a comfortable ride to go with all the creature comforts that are in the newer trucks today….
Keep on trucking, and bouncing in your barn yard specials…….

What do you think I’m saying about y’all. You are nerds! A 4 door 1/2 ton short bed is less than useless. It’s not a truck, It’s a car. All y’all are the lift kit for nothing, mall krawling, pavement princess’s, wanna be, over compensating. Notice how there isn’t ‘issues’ with single cab long bed? Go back to your tuner HA-HA-Hondas that need ridiculous forced induction to get out of its own way. FYI it’s GM Authority you have no authority or knowledge on GM vehicles so go back to lurking.

So Hell bumpkin, my useless 1/2 with all the toys and gadgets looks pretty damn good while it’s running up and down the road…..

I to have had this problem with no resolution in sight. It started with my 14 GMC it wasn’t horrible but it was present got a 17 GMC and figured by now they would have this sorted out but i was wrong. The only way that GM is going to own this problem due to the significant amount of trucks it effects is going to be a Class Action Lawsuit It pains me to say that cause i would never own any other truck on the market but they are proving to me that is the only way to get this fixed.

I have owned my 2016 Silverado for over a year and a half, i am so disappointed in the truck because of the shake and the rough shifting, i don’t hardly drive it. The truck has just over 5k on it. I am gonna take it back to the dealership and see what they can do, because i can’t take anymore. I purchased it at Hendricks Chevrolet in Carey North Carolina. I love the truck, it’s a fully loaded LTZ 4×4, i just can’t take the shaking and the hard shifting. It’s embarrassing when my friends and my wife is in the truck, everybody says dam whats wrong with your truck. The dealership they can’t find anything wrong.

Well I have explained a few times on here that I changed my wheels and tires…
The 20 in wheels are the same spec as the stock 20’s, but I only buy COOPER tires and I did go from 275 55 20’s to the AT3’s and up sized to 305 55 20’s, Also My truck came stock with RANCHO struts and shocks so It came stock set up different than the rest of the GM pickups… Now I did do the front spacers to level her out and also replaced the skinny stock RANCHO’s with their 9000’s and set the adjustments to the 5 setting… I have 37000 miles on her out here in California and drive the shit out of her, but I did do a lot of mods as well… I tuned her the Hypertech tuner, and besides the tire size cal, I also opened up the speed and RPM to the max, and also set the trans to 25% harder than stock…. I still think she still shift like shit until I cut her loose and she’ll try to put you in the bed when she shifts…. I never liked the 1’st to second shift but wide open she locks up and breaks the ass end loose with no problem… Now my other shifts are just as hard, my 3rd to 4th shifts around 110 mph, and on the freeway when I kick her in the ass and she down shifts from 6th to 4th, and up shifts back up to 5th she breaks the tires loose with no problem….
Did I mention that even at over 130mph I can let the wheel go and she runs straight down the road, the only thing that drives me nuts is the way the shitty hood moves around from about 100mph and above…..
Now I know your high priced LTZ is the very same as the cheaper models just like the GMC Denali is except for the all wheel drive option, it’s what Government Motors is putting out there on the market these days. The Denali I drove did what your truck is doing on my road test… I blame the people at the top that are running GM for their over priced shitty cars and trucks for the lack of quality they sell… SHE and THEY are not real car people and it shows… Their all CO’s COO’s and O’s we don’t even know about, most department heads at GM now are WOMAN, so need I say more…. The proof is in the pudding as they say….

I know for sure what I’m saying because I have been a long time GMC owner, and since 2013 between my wife, son and I have had 5 NEW GMC ‘s… She a 13 Enclave , now a 14 Terrain Denali, my son a 15 Sierra Z71 4×4, and I had a 14 SLE but gave it back to the Dealer 3 months and 3000 miles later which they bought back because I hated the shitty ride…. Now I have my 2014 Sierra All Terrain SLT Z71, and am really happy with it, but after I made some changes and up grades….

I’m waiting to see what the 2019’s look like, suppose to be all NEW, so lets see if they fixed the old problems, and look for the new ones…

My 2016 Silverado shakes when going from 4 to 8 cylinders. It has a 5.3 ecotec3 engine. The problem is with the stupid system of 8 to 4 cylinders providing power. It shakes when going from 4 to 8 when running on 4 and speeding up to run on all 8. A dumb system to save gas and cause uneven wear in the engine. when running on all 8 it never shakes. Bought a plug in for the aldl to make it run on all 8 all the time and it only worked for 2 weeks. Sent it back and got my money back. When running on all 8 had no shakes.

Tires are not the issue here guys. I have had 3 new trucks since 2014 with 3 different wheel/tire combos. All factory installed.
My 2014 1500 didn’t have the shakes. Can’t remember which tires it came with. It had 18″ wheels.
    My 2016 2500HD had 20″ Goodyear SRA’s. No shakes.
My 2017 2500HD has 18″ Goodyear Duratracs. Shakes once in a while. Usually somewhere between 68-75 mph. I can go back and forth across the same piece of highway 10 times in a week and it will shake one time.

I bought the Hypertach tuner for my 14 and besides maxing out all the parameters I also deleted that engine management so that it stays in 8 cyls….. The thing I like about that is the way the engine backs down better, and uses less braking…. Not to forget, the power increase, and if I don’t hear my K&N cold air roar, I do see a small increase in gas mileage but that isn’t anything I worry about….. If that was that important I wouldn’t have bought a 5,000 lbs truck…..

I don’t have that shaking problem like so guys on are talking about, so I can’t comment on that, except the only thing that shakes on my truck is that dam light weight HOOD at around 100 mph and above , I sware the dam thing will blow off ….

Some of the comments on GM forums have mentioned fixes on their Sierras or Silverados. One fix was wheel bearings and another had to do with replacing the gears in the rear end, some type of quality control issue from down in Mexico. Good Luck !

Can’t just blame the Mexicans, a lot of the parts on my Mexican built Silverado are tagged “Made in Canada” and “Made in USA”, who knows where the offending combination of parts are from. Could be a balance/harmonics issue from the design.

All this, plus i put 2 new rear shocks on due to the fact the right one (which was already replaced) had big fluid drips down the front side of it after only 3k miles of usage. Check tire rim temperatures (all four). You will find one of the brakes are locking up and going into anti-lock mode but not lighting up the dash light. Pull over immediately when the shaking starts and with an infrared thermometer check which rim is hot. Still don’t know the cause but brake pedal becomes very firm with no play. Happens in the same place every day after a certain distance of driving.

GM solution is to just not drive in AWD highway speeds. I Live in CANADA so that’s a joke on me then. It sits in my driveway. My 2012 2500 HD is a dream to drive so I use that.

yup, gmc double cab, gasser and after multiple tire balancing tries, couple of new tires, the dealership has managed to lower the speed at which it vibrates. Mine was vibrating at freeway speeds..that’s the worst because that where I spend most of my time..now, after much shop time, the truck gives a shake at 42-46mph. I can live with that, shouldn’t have to though! This is my 3rd and last GM product. I will say the new gasser is a great engine and tuned better than ever. Welcome to the shakers anonymous club! I researched these trucks extensively before purchasing my used Denali today. Reading about the shake barely prepares you for the reality!

At 60 you can feel a vibration happening. Feels like a car with bad tires or a slightly bent wheel, but it does not originate from one corner.
At 70-80mph, holy-baby-jesus! My organs turned to scrambled eggs! Very annoying, everything shakes severely….like a jalopy and not a $60k truck. Looking at the passenger seat reminded me of seeing movies about manned space flights re-entering the atmosphere!

So, I’m not unhappy about the purchase. I knew about this WELL DOCUMENTED problem and assumed I could live with it. I can not! I will be going to a driveline shop to have them balance the shaft properly. If that doesn’t cure it, I’ll look into purchasing an aftermarket 2-piece drive shaft.

I wish all of you luck and shame on GM for claiming no liability in this obvious error on their part!

I see reports that new trucks get this around 1000 miles of break in…well that to me means something is loosening up. I can still remember the “old days” when GM remembered how to build a vehicle, even the new 2019’s are having major issues, this shaking should be a fixable problem but it just may be a problem GM thinks will go away with the new platform. I think the problem lies with the torque converter, this new chassis is much tighter and more susceptible to vibration, just my take on this issue.

Anyone still having issue with the ride vibration?? I have a 2017 GMC Denali 1500…bought it with 5,000 miles, now just up to 30,000 miles. Took it to dealer last week to have a towing code fixed…said a broken wire caused it. Also did some retune on the computer for a brake pedal issue?? Anyway…had it home a week & last night I got the vibration I’ve read about in this forum. Happens from 55mph up to 75 mph ( all the faster I dared to go). Feels like going over rumble strips on the side lines…but not. Truck was always a little weird on the take off shift from 1st to 2nd…kind of late & unpredictable…but nice & crisp in all other gears up to overdrive. Has been a great truck otherwise. I have driven a hundred different kind of cars/trucks over the past 50 years…never experienced this issue. But kind of feels like transmission is shuddering?? Have not contacted the dealership about this yet. Just looking for ideas & comments before I make the call.

I now have 10k miles on it since I ‘fixed’ the problem. I think it was a separated tire.
99.9% of the time a separation will cause a bulge in the tire. Not so in my case. I called GM to find that my VIN was not part of the vibration recall. I pulled the driveshaft and had it balanced. It was super close, but not perfect. A couple hammer tings and it was ‘perfect’.
      The problem remained.

Well, I owned the truck now so I was committed. On goes a lift and level, 285 AT tires, alignment and wheel spacers. Pick up the truck post work and…..smooth😂 Well, smooth as a pick up truck with a solid rear gets anyway😎

I can only think it was a separated tire somewhere that we never diagnosed. Vibration free and happy now with the truck. Just had a rotate, balance and align re-done and all is the same.

Good luck with your trucks though🙏🏾

I will say that after all the money I have spent to get the vibration issue fixed, I have found out that the drive shaft is what goes out of balance and causes the vibration. Chevy is not taking any responsibility to it. They know it’s an issue and cannot seem to get it right. I hope you can get your truck fixed. I will by a Toyota Truck not time! All the best.

My Sierra has picked up the vibration at 70k miles. I don’t believe the majority of instances of this problem are related to the drive shaft. The vibration seems most prevalent at highway speeds and in the 1200 to 1800rpm range but occurs ar lower speeds if in that band and steady. The trans also has to be warm. If you manually shift into a lower gear and get out of that rpm band or shift into neutral the shake goes away. An out of balance driveshaft would vibrate continually at a given speed and not be tied to engine rpm. This issue is related to the transmission.

My 2016 silverado had a shutter shake at around 13,000 mi on it between 50 & 70 mph so I took it to koon chevy in md and they flush out the transmission fluid and the issue went away also so check it out with the dealer in your town

I brought my 2018 Sierra to the dealer who was not helpful once he found out my truck was out of warranty and that I had not purchased it there. Went to a different dealer who was super helpful. Explained what they had seen in other trucks and that the latest service bulletin with the Mobil 1 flush seemed to be doing the trick most of the time. He said once in a while they end up having to replace the torque converter if the moisture got the better of it. So far the flush has cured mine.

I would also add that the problem is much more prevalent when its higher humidity outside. Once the weather turned colder and the air dried out the problem almost went away prior to getting into the dealer.

I have a 2017 Chevrolet High Country 6.2 with the 8 speed Transmission. It was smooth for the first 40,000 miles and then started to shake like I was on a bad road. The dealer replaced the torque converter to no avail and now did a transmission flush and fill with a new type of fluid. They say it will take 400-500 miles to smooth out and so far its no better. At 70mph or higher it shakes so bad the passenger seat is visibly moving. They have also said “the tires are a factor” as they say they will need replacement soon. I’m going to wait the 400-500 miles and bring it back. Disappointed with my $50,000 truck.

So it’s been some time since my post, 2018 Silverado Crew cab 1500 Shaking.
Too bad I can’t post a pict to give you a better idea. The Rare orange version came with a DEALER installed 3″ lift kit and American Racing wheels 305/65/17 . Shook from 90 to 120 kmh like not driveable. Dealer tested and tested but in the end issue was passed off to GMC. LOL their opinion is that it falls within acceptable tolerances. YEAH lets all buy American made LOL.
In the end I removed the lift kit ( FRONT ONLY ) NO MORE SHAKING. Actual cause ?
Not built like my 2012 2500 HD , will never sell.
    The End !

Has anyone ever gotten this repaired by GM for free?

No – In fact the shake continues to cost me money. Just had the driveshaft re-balanced ($425.00) The shake has tweak the transfer case and the torque converter ($1500.00) and I just had my tires re-balanced again and I still have the shake at 70 mph! Don’t know what I can do next to eliminate the “Chevy Shake”!! Discouraging. On another forum, I was contact by a gentleman who just bought a 2021 Chevy Silverado and after two (2) weeks of owning it he has the “Chevy Shake” at 70 mph! Waiting to hear back as to what GM is doing about it. I was told to replace my driveshaft with a custom built steel shaft.Help me out !!

3 months after fluid swap, 5000 miles and no issues. Will see once the outside temp starts climbing and the humidity returns if the cure is complete. GM did kick in some and the dealer discounted some. My out of pocket was $100 on a truck with 70000 miles on it.

What fluid swap was done? Transmission? I am around 65,000 miles now on a 2017 and I was going to change filter and fluid.

It was Mobil 1 transmission fluid. It was in the latest service bulletin to get rid of the shudder from the torque converter. Free change under warranty. You can negotiate a discount if out of warranty if you are experiencing the problem. Trans fluid change isnt even in GM’s recommended service at that mileage. The original fluid had an issue attracting water.

Ok, I thought it was recommended around 75,000 and I was going to do it early to try to save the transmission life, and I also plan on towing my boat. I live in Southeast Ohio, hopefully I can negotiate with my dealer that I have the warranty with.

Unfortunately I am still having the “SHAKE”!! Spent so much trying to figure it out. Local Mechanic thinks it could be linked to me having a leveling kit on the truck. Thoughts? So far I have balanced the driveshaft, new tires, new shocks/struts, new torque converter and tires balanced and checked 3 times. I was told to have a custom steel driveshaft made that helped another Chevy owner fix the shake but i’m at odds. Any new updates would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Rotate the tires front to back. Feel very carefully as you approach 70mph. If that effects the steering wheel shake at all, you will know it’s in the tires.

Thank you rajeevx7 – I appreciate the feedback. Unfortunately I did that as well. I was also told that the leveling kit for the front of the truck may have caused the rear to not function properly. The shake is definitely coming from the rear. Has anyone experienced anything like this due to a leveling kit? I may start with having a custom steel shaft made.

During what ever cured my shake, I put a 2” lift on the front and 1” lift on the rear…..+ several other things all at once. So, I don’t know exactly what solved the shake but it is gone.

Can u attach a gopro down there to film what the axle, axle mounts, diff, ujoint are doing before and after 70mph? You may be able to see something excessively vibrating….

I have driven 4 Silverado’s from 2014 to 2018 and all have a bad shake. I have a 2014 Z71 at 74 miles per hour you better not have a drink in the center counsel without a lid on it.

Wow Kurt. Have you been able to pinpoint the issue? What things have you done to stop it? I’m running out of possible causes & MONEY!

I have all-terrain 285 tires, spacers and a lift. The truck does no where near a shake anymore to spill a drink, but there is slight vibration in that range, say 67-77mph. It’s not my wife’s odyssey’s butter smooth ride, but it’s well within the comfort territory.
If I went totally stock again, there is no doubt in my mind that the slight vibration would be really minimized.

I’m almost to 70k so I’m looking forward to the trans/transaxle and diff flush with the newest synthetic fluids.

Thanks rajjeevx7 – I did the flush and all including a new torque converter – No go!! Still the shake. I may put a spacer in the rear end to make the driveshaft more level. I may also just try having a steel driveshaft made. I think the GM Aluminum shaft is too light and the reason so many GM truck owners are complaining about the shake. Stay in touch – I appreciate the support!

2018 Chevy Shake, It’s a known issue to GM. They have a factory bulletin about it, as of July 2021. It’s like riding over rumble strips. They said they need to change the oil in the “converter” (torque converter.) ” May have to be done numerous times before it goes away.”

Bob Steele, Are you the Chevy dealer in Cocoa Florida? Got a TSB number for us?

I just had my trans, transaxle, diff and front diff flushed or drain/filled.
Yes, it helped. But, I don’t think my vin was in the mobile1 tsb, i think I just got regular delco all around.

I think the guys who have changed their suspension geometry are experiencing a different issue. My stock 2018 GMC SLT picked up the shake at 70k miles. Primarily in warmer temps once the trans was up to temp and only in gear in an rpm band. Fluid change at dealer to Mobil 1 resolved the issue. Have put 15k miles on truck since the change.

I’m no dealer. Just a Chevy owner. So far the oil change (Differential) has worked. Only drove it 20 miles so far.

Derek I have put all new struts & shocks, new cat converter, new torque converter, new tires, countless balances and rotations and as I mentioned a new steel driveshaft. Still no go after $10K+ I’m looking for suggestions too………

Guys – do you think a 10ply tire would cause this vibration? I do not have aggressive tread but the tire is extra hard and many of my friends are convinced that is causing the vibration. It seems to shake less on certain paved roads (especially new asphalt) any support is appreciated.

I live in Qatar and drive a GMC Sierra truck 2012. On the highway i can’t hear my radio or phone conversations because of the backseat rattles and dancing fire extinguisher buckle.

The extinguisher buckle should be an easy fix. As far as the rattles….that’s usually a long time to track down. Good luck!

Samuel – Have you tried to diagnose the shake? I’m just looking for different ideas. I’ve tried everything

    Reply

Yes, all the mechanics pointed to everything under the car but the tyres. I moved my front tyres to the rear and my shaking also moved from the front to the back so I invest in a new set of tyres. All the shaking and vibration disappeared.

That’s interesting Joe. Thank you for sharing. I will say that the shake my truck has is not transmission related because when it starts shaking, I have put it in neutral and the shake is still there – therefore eliminating the transmission as the culprit. I’m lost – I have tried everything.

Your torque converter still spins in neutral as does the pump operate. Combined they hold about 10qts of fluid.
