The GM Authority Take

We attribute the continued decrease in Malibu sales volume to the continued shift in consumer purchase dynamics, in which car buyers choose crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) at the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and coupes. Whether the CUV craze is permanent or temporary is anyone’s guess at the moment, which is why we expect the Malibu to continue seeing depressed sales volumes in the near- to medium-terms — a rather unfortunate circumstance given the product substance delivered by the ninth-generation Malibu.

In addition, Malibu sales volumes are dropping faster than those of its most direct competitors from Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. All of these models outsold the Malibu almost three-fold in June.

  1. very simple –
    – Inner design is behind the competition
    – Lack of advance safety in lower trims , still optional in the high level trims
    – Market Reluctance for small displacement turbo engine in big cars (nick name “Obama Engine ” , Camry and accord still keep 2.4 natural aspirated engines .)

    here is an example :

Toyota Camry LE model ( one trim above the base ) :
    standard :

Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P)24 — Pre-Collision System23 with Pedestrian Detection34 (PCS w/PD), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA),22 Automatic High Beams (AHB)35 and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)25

None of those cars listed are even ‘big’. They’re all mid-size cars.

  2. They can’t just blame it on the switch to SUV’s. Toyota and Nissan sales didn’t decrease this much. They need someone in sales or marketing who can figure this out and fix it. The Malibu no matter how good it may be can never match the Camary mainly because the lack of trust people have in GM. The ability to overcome those obsticals will determine how successful GM will be as a company.

  3. Malibu has a good looking exterior and the interior is better arranged then their Japanese competitor . the engine is underpowered and lane departure and side alert to mention a few items should be standard . as far as gm marketing – it stinks it always did and it seems it will never change –don’t they see their competitors adds
