The GM Authority Take

We long expected that the new Equinox would sell in even higher volumes than the model it replaced once its launch was (close to being) completed, so long as GM could keep up with demand, and it finally took place in June — as the vehicle posted record June sales figures for the U.S. and Canada.

We believe that The General is capable of meeting increased demand for the new Equinox, since it has dedicated the GM CAMI factory run by GM Canada to produce the new Equinox, while moving production of the new GMC Terrain, which was previously also assembled at CAMI, to the San Luis Potosi factory operated by GM Mexico. The move enables GM to have higher potential production capacity of both the Equinox and Terrain, as production of both vehicles — which are all-new for the 2018 model year — are assembled at separate facilities.

About The Chevrolet Equinox

The completely-overhauled 2018 Chevy Equinox features an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture (GM’s D2 platform) that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the second-gen model. As a result, the new Equinox gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety. In addition, the 2018 Equinox gets an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model.

These enhancements build on the great reputation of the Equinox in the marketplace, taking advantage of consumers’ newfound and seemingly insatiable love affair with crossovers at the expense of other vehicle types, such as sedans.

The 2018 Equinox first launched with only the base 1.5L Turbo engine in April 2017. The optional, up-level 2.0L Turbo engine followed roughly 45 days after, thereby completing the roll-out of gasoline-engined Equinoxes. Meanwhile, the Equinox with the 1.6L turbo-diesel engine will launch at the end of the summer.

  1. I guess people waited till the 18 came out and I guess it received a lot of praise from buyers.

  2. I believe a lot of these sales were due to the incredible lease deals on the older generation Equinoxes to clear out inventory
