The GM Authority Take

The XT5 continues to reap the benefits of current market trends in which consumers favor crossovers at the expense of sedans. The vehicle’s June sales performance enabled it to take second place in terms of cumulative sales volume in the front-drive, midsize luxury crossover space, directly behind the Lexus RX, which accounted for 8,408 deliveries during the same time period.

Sales Numbers - Mid-Size Luxury Front-Drive CUV Sales - June 2017 - United States

MODEL JUN 17 / JUN 16 JUNE 17 JUNE 16 YTD 17 / YTD 16 YTD 17 YTD 16
RX +4.51% 8,408 8,045 -5.41% 46,737 49,412
XT5 +21.65% 5,091 4,185 +313.40% 29,798 7,208
MDX +14.04% 4,240 3,718 -4.31% 23,555 24,615
MKX +0.36% 2,475 2,466 +2.74% 15,502 15,089

Even so, Cadillac remains absent from the sport-luxury crossover space occupied by market stalwarts from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche and Jaguar.

  1. Lexus has three variants of it RX models , RX350 , RX450h and the RX350 F Sport all are available with AWD .
Cadillac doesn’t have the same type of mix other than trim levels . Since both cars sell in the same segment I think Cadillac should offer a hybrid and a Sport model . Even though the F-Sport is basically trim pieces and a suspension you can somewhat change , Cadillac could follow suit with nothing more than a more aggressive grill / front clip and special wheels and trim pieces .
Iv’e checked out these RX models and even though I am a GM guy , I like the RX models . The spindle grill on the F-Sport is the best looking of the bunch IMO . They also have a much updated interior that is very high quality and the fit and finish are hard to beat . There is the reason Lexus is selling so many of them and they have an excellent quality score in most surveys .
Cadillac will never do a V-Sport of it’s XT5 but adding a more aggressive look to the model might keep younger people from buyimg the Lexus , which is why the F-Sport even exists .
Cadillac also needs to spend more money on its interior quality finishes. . As the XT5 ages it should be a point of attention .
With very little cost and more attention to detail Cadillac just might knock Lexus from its top spot .

  2. Sales numbers are good.

I don’t suspect Johan set out to compete with Lexus, though …

    1. Sales numbers are good? Cadillac just fell to 7th place, in their home market no less! Just who is Johan competing with?

  3. It’s time for Cadillac to fill out the XT5 roster with 275 hp LTG 2.0L 4-cyl turbo entry model and 420 hp LF3 twin-turbo 3.6L V6 for the top tier model; while mixing high performance with a CUV was insanity a few years ago, Cadillac leadership needs to look at the ever changing CUV landscape and how just about everyone is offering a high performance variant of the CUV they’re building as Ferrari is even considering developing a CUV.

  4. I am amazed that anyone would buy a Lexus RX 350. That car is beyond terminally UGLY. I have never seen a car with so many lines going in so many different directions. Just looking at that car can cause an Epileptic fit!!!

  5. Cadillac needs to provide to LTG 2.0 4 -cyl turbo and a smaller XT5 like Lincoln ( which is running away with their MKC ) . Cadillac needs to rethink the option packages ex. you can’t get a sunroof unless you choose the package that includes navigation ****REALLY **** if you are pushing ONSTAR you don’t need navigation___EVERY LEXUS IS UGLY.
