The GM Authority Take
While U.S. CTS sales fell 44.2 percent, the overall midsize luxury sedan segment grew 6.37 percent. Of the seven models that define the midsize luxury sedan segment, four posted sales volume growth — the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (up 0.56 percent), the BMW 5 Series (up 42.89 percent), Genesis G80 (sales increased from zero to 1,276 units) and the Volvo 90 series (for a cumulative 1,101 units). Meanwhile, the Audi A6/S6 saw sales decrease 15.68 percent, Lexus GS deliveries fell 52.18 percent, and Infiniti Q70 sales fell 19.73 percent, making the Lexus the only vehicle in the class post an even greater sales decrease than the CTS.
The results place the Cadillac CTS into sixth place in terms of cumulative sales volume in June, behind the three German rivals, as well as behind Genesis and Volvo, yet ahead of Lexus and Infiniti.
As in months prior, we continue to associate the reasons for the decline in CTS sales with stiff competition from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, and Volvo 90 series, all of which are all-new for the 2017 model year. In addition, the Genesis G80 is a new entrant that has attained notable sales volume in a short period of time. What’s more, the CTS is among the oldest vehicles in the class, having been redesigned for the 2014 model year.

Those numbers are not a suprise to anyone , although it is a bit worse than i would have thought . This is Cadillac’s plan and an expensive one at that . Going into their self-imposed hiatus is a sign that they don’t seem to worried that the few customers that are buying ” cars ” are not on their shopping list . It’s like Trump and health care , just let it die or self implode then replace it with something else .
And while the CTS dies a slow death the other manufacturers are churning out new products . This is not the best business case when your goal is to make money and grow your market share . What ever car comes to market as the CTS’s replacement needs to be better than what is being sold right now in it’s segment . JDN said the new cars will be niche products which tells us that Cadillac doesn’t expect to sell alot of them . How are they going to make any money on these newbies unless they come out way over priced which in turn will hurt sales right from the beginning . TAP’s aren’t the best way to gain new customers or regain the cost of R&D .
The article mentioned the new G80 from Genesis and this bares watching as this new division from Hyundai looks to fill in the gap that Cadillac has abandoned , building smooth riding cars with the latest safety technology and even new features at a semi-reasonable price . Even some of the latest research shows a return to that type of riding experience that customers want .
Wake-up Cadillac , while you are in your hiatus there is a new kid in town .
Do not forget that CT6 competes with S/7/A8/LS/XJ. It does not compete with the 5 and E. Cadillac offers a $55,000 model for the senior citizens who are used to paying for a Cadillac DTS.
CT6 isn’t even on the same planet as the S Class / A8 / 7 Series.
At best it tries to compete with the E Class and 5 series, if it wasn’t for that cheap interior and horrible transmission and noisy engine.
Only the Escalade and the XT5 keeps Cadillac (barely) afloat.
The cars are a joke.
Both CTS and GS dropping massively while sales of obnoxious crossovers are increasing. I hate people.
The CTS is too small and cut up inside. The trunk is goofy. About a week ago it finally dawned on me why people prefer CUV/SUV. They may want to do something wild and crazy like buy a small desk chair and bring it home without renting a vehicle.
I am not a CUV/SUV person. I have always referred to them as WMDs. In this area people with the poorest driving skills buy the biggest vehicles. We try to stay out of harm’s way as they drift from lane to lane. Kings of the road.
I always park as far away as possible in a parking lot and walk to the building. Invariably when I come back to my car it’s flanked by those things. Not uncommon for one to be parked so close to the driver door that I have to wait for the owner to come out and move it. Annoying.
This is specific to my area and not representative of the entire planet.
