The GM Authority Take
Being the oldest vehicle in its class with very little advertising support, the Cadillac ATS continues to suffer at the hands of newer and more modern competitors, such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3/4 Series, the Audi A4/A5 lineup, Lexus IS/RC, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Infiniti Q50, and even the Volvo 60 series.
During the month, the ATS family occupied second-to-last place in terms of overall sales volume in the compact luxury sport segment — behind BMW 3/4 series in first place with 9,617 sales, Mercedes-Benz C-Class family in second with 7,116 deliveries, Audi A4/A5 with 5,376 family in third, Infiniti Q50/Q60 in fourth with 4,075 deliveries, Lexus IS/RC in fifth with 2,602 deliveries, and Volvo 60 series in sixth with 1,785 deliveries. Cadillac took seventh with 1,185 deliveries of the ATS, just ahead of segment newcomer Alfa Romeo Giulia with 992 deliveries. It’s worthy to note that the industry-wide slump in car sales at the hands of crossovers did not impact the compact sport-luxury car space in June, as the segment saw a 3.28 percent uptick in sales to 31,917 units.
As for the ATS, its replacement can not come soon enough to turn around the luxury marque’s sales slump in this segment – as the current model is a great car, but one that comes up short on being the segment leader in every element except for driving dynamics, in which the ATS family excels. The vehicle will likely be called Cadillac CT3, and though we initially believe that it will be based on GM’s award-winning and highly-capable rear-drive Alpha platform (or its successor, the Alpha 2 platform), recent comments from Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen have cast doubts on the idea.

Comments
We need to bring back some of the excitement from a couple of years ago and one way would be to change how Cadillac’s ATS is sold to the public in commercials. When the commercial has an actor get into a Cadillac ATS, cut into the image of a driver of a Cadillac ATS-V.R with the narrator talking about the LF4 twin-turbocharged 3.6L DOHC-4v V6 making over 460 horsepower as the ATS-V.R screams on a road course then shift back into production car of how satisfying and enjoyable driving the ATS-V.
I haven’t seen any commercials for the ATS in years and also the leases went up like $150 from what they were a couple years ago. That’s probably the main reason sales are in the toilet.
Lease payment sucks primarily because the residual value is so terrible
Two things, and I’d be in one.
1. Emergency redesign of front seatbacks and rear seats to increase legroom.
2. Put some lease cash on the hoods.
How long before Lincoln outsells Cadillac yearly?
US consumers have yet to see GM Cadillac as a true blue German rival. I’m starting to think that GM needs to re-evaluate the meaning of American luxury in a world offering so many options.
GMC is luxurious without even trying and a great prototype for both Buick and Cadillac.
