Chevrolet is making quite a big bet on diesel as Volkswagen leaves a vacated space for oil burners. To show it’s serious, Chevrolet announced plans for a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox with a diesel powertrain at the reveal of the compact crossover.
Now, it has a price. According to order guides sourced by Cars Direct, the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox will start at $31,435 including destination. Just over $31,000 will buy consumers an Equinox LT Diesel, which comes equipped with front-wheel drive, 17-inch wheels and a seven-inch infotainment unit. A $2,395 Sun and Infotainment Package is available, which nets a power sunroof, eight-inch infotainment system and more.
Chevrolet will also offer the 2018 Equinox in Premier Diesel trimmings. The price climbs accordingly, however. A 2018 Chevrolet Equinox Premier Diesel will start at $33,930 but includes 18-inch wheels, leather seats, the 8-inch touchscreen and dual-zone climate control.  All-wheel drive is a $1,750 option on both the LT and Premier models.
For comparison, the Equinox Premier Diesel is actually $600 less expensive than the Equinox Premier equipped with the 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. Chevrolet says this is because the gasoline-powered Premier model includes additional niceties such as 19-inch wheels and dual exhaust.
There’s not much to compare the 2018 Equinox Diesel to when looking at prices, but the diesel-powered crossover does seem to be a relevant option, especially with the potential for 32 mpg city and 40 mpg highway fuel economy ratings. Those figures would make the Equinox the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its class.

No word on GVWR and towing capacity yet?
Tow capacity for the diesel is same as the base engine; 1500 lbs max (including people and gear inside the vehicle). This is a fuel-mizer engine, not a towing engine.
Funny, in Europe, Toyota officially supports 1500 pounds of towing for the 2016+ Prius thanks to good cooling systems 🙂
Various sites say 3500# up to 5000# for the diesel. that’s the only reason I’m considering it.
Serious competition for the new Buick Regal TourX. GM stubs it toe, again?
The 32 mpg city and 40 mpg highway fuel mileage of the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox Diesel could be a BIG game changer and give the new Equinox a clear advantage over competitors.
But.. .. How is it anticipated that the Equinox 1.6L turbodiesel will be 32 MPG city, if the 1.6L turbodiesel Cruze is 30MPG EPA city ????? Car should be more efficient than an SUV with an identical drivetrain?
Makes you wonder what a 3-cylinder variant featuring a 1,300cc displacement would do in something like the Chevy Trax or Buick Encore as they probably wouldn’t use this same 1.6 liter turbo diesel (CDTI) engine.
Would rather see a hybrid or plugin hybrid option. More power than a 3 cylinder and more MPG too.
Car and Driver magazine in June 2017 managed to milk 70 mpg mileage out of the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze which makes you wonder whether it might be possible to squeeze 50 mile mileage from the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox Diesel.
I currently drive a 2015 Golf Diesel and calculate every tank fillup and get from 44 to 65 mpg depending on terrain and highways used. Diesel TORQUE is awesome (my 6th diesel, VW and GM) to drive and use for towing. Going to order new Cruze Hatchback Diesel once they are available. …… I think diesel power for GM will be a winner. …… eeh
Electric torque is awesome too
