The Mustang vs Camaro rivalry has been ongoing for decades. Through one-upmanship, lap times and performance figures, some of the best from Chevrolet and Ford has come through the Camaro and Mustang nameplates.
In 2017, the rivalry isn’t just the ongoing, it’s hotter. The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and 2017 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350R represent the top dogs of both pony cars turned sports cars. So, naturally, a Head 2 Head was in order from Motor Trend.
The 2017 Camaro ZL1 takes the win when it comes to performance and outright numbers. It has more horsepower, more torque and downright outperforms the Mustang GT350R on the track.
However, there’s no denying there’s something a little more visceral and raw about the Shelby. It sounds better, it’s dramatic and those feelings convey more than the more powerful ZL1.

Wow, wasn’t even close
Reviewers can give the Mustang the win, everyone who watched the video knew which car performed better numbers wise.
I think it’s probably a little thought in their heads that they are trying to shake their supposed “Pro GM” stance that a lot of people gave them flack on.
And the 1LE will only increase the margin of victory.
Knowing that ZL1 1LE was only two months away it was given that they would choose the Mustang. If they didn’t what would they compare the 1LE to later on?
They were complaining that the Camaro was too calm. Well, it’s a daily driver w/ track performance. Wonder why Cammisa didn’t join the other two around the track? There is no back seat in the Mustang R? It’s a track purpose machine only. And that’s why they have such different personalities.
So if you make the car slower and less refined and you win?

Basically a compo of the “Race” (R version) ‘Stang versus the “Road” Camaro!? (ZL1) Is that really a comparison at the end of the day… Put the R ‘Stang up against the ZL1 1LE then I might actually watch the video. Sigh.

Yep, propagating and supporting an invalid comparison. And here I was thinking the media were impartial and unbiased…….yeah…..right!
If you look at the chart with the times the Mustang is as fast as the Camaro SS 1LE, which the Camaro is 65 hp short.
