On this episode of Roadkill, David Freigburger and Mike Finnegan decide to take a 1969 Chevrolet Impala – fitted with the blown big block from the Crusher Camaro – and pit it against the 1971 Datsun ‘Rotsun’ 240Z with its turbocharged Ford 5.0 V8.
It’s a raucous, rusty Roadkill rumble.
The fellas have to overcome a bunch of obstacles before the cars are ready to race, but that’s to be expected when you’re working with a couple of cars approaching the 50-year mark. In fact, even with the hosts’ expertise, the Rotsun isn’t ready to run at the scheduled time; fortunately, the folks at Tuscon Dragway give the guys a break, allowing them to run between the heats of an important event at the track.
The Impala makes 460 hp and about 510 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels, although as we find out, it’s a bit of a porker at 4,168 lbs. The Rotsun, meanwhile, weighs a healthy 2,566 lbs.
Freiburger ends up running an 11.8 on the Impala’s first pass, and an 11.95 on its second. The Rotsun, on the other hand, doesn’t finish a single pass.
While it’s not the ending we were hoping to see, failure can be every bit as entertaining as success. Be sure to check it out yourself, above.
