General Motors may have one major core competency to do battle with major tech companies working towards self-driving cars: GM knows how to build a car.
It’s been mass producing cars for decades, so you could say GM knows a thing or two about the process. On the other hand, tech companies like Apple, Google’s Waymo and even Uber have never actually built a vehicle. Instead, they use retrofitted vehicles from other automakers.
GM, instead, has gone and acquired Cruise Automation for additional driverless car expertise. Combined with its manufacturing skills, the automaker may be poised as best fit for the driverless revolution forthcoming. Most recently, GM mass produced its first batch of autonomous vehicles based on the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV. These cars rolled off the same assembly line as the Chevrolet Sonic at the Orion plant.
Now, GM has 180 driverless cars itching to produce crucial data for GM and Cruise Automation. While tech companies may develop their own software, there’s no denying GM could house the whole package in-house.
