GMC Canyon Sales Drop 26 Percent To 2,477 Units In May 2017

Cumulative GMC Canyon sales decreased in the United States and increased in Canada during May 2017.

GMC Canyon deliveries in the United States totaled 2,477 units in May 2017, a decrease of 26.3 percent compared to 3,361 units sold in May 2016. In the first five months of 2017, sales of the mid-size pickup truck decreased 11.4 percent to 12,372 units.

GMC Canyon Sales – May 2017 – Canada

In Canada, GMC Canyon sales increased 25.4 percent to 578 units in May 2017. In the first five months of the year, sales of the midsize truck increased 6.8 percent to 2,210 units.

The GM Authority Take

The continued decline in cumulative U.S. Canyon sales volume continues to surprise us given the nameplate’s highly-impressive sales performance since the launch of the second-generation Canyon in 2015.

As in months past, we attribute the decline to the full-size GMC Sierra cutting into Canyon deliveries, as incentives on the full-size Sierra have been very lucrative in recent months, including in May, but very limited on the Canyon. We believe that the same circumstance also negatively impacted sales of the Canyon’s Chevy-badged brother — the Chevrolet Colorado.

  2. Actually the dealers have been low on product and it has been slow coming in. Much of what was offered in March after the record sales in Jan and Fed are just now arriving in the last two weeks.

    I bought my Denali in March and it was one of 3 in the entire region. A few have come in since but most sold as they came in.

    There as nearly a month and a half there was little on the lots and no Dienali models.

    My dealer went to not truck to 5 Canyons they are expecting more soon.

    The line was slow and mixing the line with the moving of the van line built on the same rail it hurt inventory levels. They are now ready for the 18 models at a higher Capacity.

    Moving the vans to Ohio should make up for the lack of inventory.

    I had a hell of a time buying from inventory. If I had ordered in March it would be in transit now. The one I had considered ordering the dealer ordered and it is just now coming in.

    I hope this adds to some clairity based on my experience buying one of these.

    I love my new truck it is great and very comfortable. The new V6 at 400 miles on my trip odometer is showing a strong 19.7 city.

    1. Scott — as was explained to us during an official call by plant personnel a few months ago, (cutaway) van production was NOT moved out of Wentzville. Navistar simply added a line to make the cutaways at their plant in Ohio.

      So if the line at the plant was in fact slowed, it was not due to anything related to “moving” of the van line, as that did not take place. Wentzville is still producing cutaways vans, as is Navistar. The move was to expand capacity of cutaways.

      1. Well Alex what ever the lag is the fact is it takes 3 months to order a truck and Dealers were lacking product to sell accept for mega dealers like Laura etc.

        If you have little to no inventory you can’t easily sell trucks.

        My experience was not an isolated one according to others on the twins forum.

        If I had not been lucky to havegojncmh truck I would have had to order and it would just have arrived this week based on the replacement truck my desler just got in just like mine.

        Also others ordering trucks are reporting 12-17 week wait times.

        You can gindsomdttuckd but many are Diesel, extended cab long bed of a work truck. The crew short beds come in and sell pretty fast so the are not easy yogi finless the sticker is over $40k of more.

        The bottom line is there was little inventory to choose from.

        Keep in mind to the big sales at the start of the year also was due to the fact 17 production did not start till late Nov. many of these trucks did not arrive till the first of the year.

        Many wanted the new engine and 8 speed. They did not want the clunky 6 speed.

        1. Sure, if inventory was, in fact, small, then it would have definitely negatively impacted sales volume. That said, I’m not sure that 2-3 months (from order to delivery) is anything unusual for GM, or for the vehicle line in question… for that matter.

          1. Gee You know the lack of inventory, the true expected order time and out put would be a great thing for someone in the media to investigate and report.

            So many today just parrot what others say and call it news.

    That Denali mentioned is just under $50 grand here in California, and add another $3700 for the baby duramax…

    1. You get what you pay for. The refinement and on road manners m in these trucks is spectacular, and is second to none.

      Plus there are incentives to take advantage of… so… overpriced?

    2. I agree the Denali at sticker or ZR2 can be over priced but smart shopping can get you a price under$40k for a gas version of each.

      I would not pay oner$40k but I did buy for under.

      The most loaded Diesel long bed crew Denali will sticker at $48k but no one pays that unless the are stupid.

      None are over $50k. Note even at 48 they are loaded up with almost all the extras like floor liners etc.

      Most of the twins sold are $29k to $38k and many of these are hard to find since they are the CCSB that are selling well.

  4. I just ordered a 2018 GMC Canyon SLT extended cab V-6. Was told it would take about 8 weeks for delivery. I can’t wait. The salesman checked within a 500 mile radius for the model I wanted and none were found.

Well I see nothing has changed yet, seeing I tried to order a Canyon Denali 4×4 V6 last Sept 2016, in that NEW RED and when we tried to fill out the order it kept kicking it back because that color wasn’t available at that time even though all the advertising out was in that color… So the order department called the factory as I was sitting there, and she was told it wouldn’t be out until sometime this year(2017)…. Well I waited and waited and she kept calling them and they kept telling her the same damn story… So I changed my mind about buying a Canyon for a while…. Also I wanted to test that baby Duramax and even that took a couple of months before they had any in stock that weren’t already spoken for, so they let me keep one for a couple of days to see what I thought about it…. It was ok, but for $3700. 00 extra I don’t have any use for it and $3700.00 will buy a lot of GAS, seeing in everyday use, the gas gets an average 20mpg’s… I know that because my wife has a 2016 Terrain Denali with the V6 , SIX SPEED, and she even gets better than that if I don’t drive it….
      Now, I might be old school, but waiting THREE or FOUR months for a new truck seems foolish in this day and time because by the time you get it and break it in half the model year is over, and in a few months the next year is on the road…. And I don’t care what kind of deal you get you still lose that time and money…. Unless you settle for what ever inventory the factory sends the dealers, most of the time you won’t get what you want, and there isn’t that much of a difference in the prices between the sizes of the pickups anyway….. The Canyon is 6 inches narrower than my full size SIERRA, and not much shorter…. It might be a little lighter but than again it only has 4 or 6 cylinders to move it down the road….
