Community Question: What Do You Want To See From The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado?
96Sponsored Links
There’s no getting around it: the Chevrolet Silverado is looking a tad dated compared to the F-150 and Ram 1500. But, General Motors is readying its all-new generation of Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, which are likely to debut next year as 2019 models.
So, we’re here today with a very broad question, but one sure to open up a discussion: what do you want to see from the next Chevrolet Silverado?
We’ll begin with the design. The Silverado is a good looking truck, but maybe a bit old. Fresh looks are likely a given, but we’d like to see a sleeker look and we’d still sleep at night if Chevrolet designers axed the squared-off wheel arches. Inside, it’s a similar story. The interior is fairly well laid out, but things are starting to look dated, especially on the center stack and in the driver information center. Higher quality plastics would be welcome, too.
For powertrains, is almost a given we’ll see the 10-speed automatic make its way to the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado. The transmission was co-developed with Ford, which has already begun using it in the F-150. If you didn’t know, General Motors stuck the transmission in the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 first; Ford chose the F-150 Raptor.
The Silverado’s V8 and V6 offerings are pretty solid mills, but a potential diesel-powered V6 could counter Ford and Ram in the market. We may even see a hybrid. Lightweight materials should also be present to help shave weight.
The Silverado should have one big thing to sway those not bound by blue ovals or horns to come to Chevrolet’s side. We don’t know what that is, but we’re hoping there’s a big draw on such an important vehicle for Chevrolet.

- Sweepstakes Of The Month: Win a 2023 Corvette Z06 Convertible. Details here.
I’ve had and 03, 08, and now 2014 and have enjoyed each. The one area that GM (Chevy or GMC for that matter) could do to make me go down to the dealer today an purchase a new truck is the following:
1. Create a short bed sport truck
2. Include a LTZ trim level with bucket seats
3. Allow the 6.2L engine as is or from Corvette. Heck, if you really want to make a true SST (Super Sport Truck) drop in the engine from the Z06/ZL1 with 10sp paddle shifter. Would like to role my own with a stick, but paddles are alright.
I loved all my Silverados, but have to admit the 2Dr RAM Sport Truck looks awesome…but will never be in my driveway. “GM 4-Ever”…but would like to have my expectations truly exceeded.
Personally, I would not like to see the square wheel arches go away. I think of this styling as GM’s identity. The changes that I would like to see are:
– Get rid of that butt ugly hood. Go with something along the lines of the diesel HDs.
– The body integrity is horrible. Hopefully there is a fix coming in 2019 when they go aluminum. But there still will be corrosion. Obviously no one can melt ice without turning your $50,000 truck to dust. So it’s up to the manufacturers to be proactive in this area.
– Make the double cab rear seating fold down flat. For hauling in the cab. As it stands, this area is useless with the bottom of the seat folded up. Personally, if I used rear seating on a regular basis, I would have purchased a crew cab.
– Optionable “ground pounder” edition. ‘Nuff said…
– Bring back the sportside. Another GM styling identity. Plus, you don’t have to worry about those rust issues here…Win. Win.
All and all, I think the new trucks are beautiful…’Cept that hood…uhh. However, I hope they figure out that shaking at high speeds business that I have been reading about, before I’m ready to trade in 2019.
Lastly, be the leader, not the follower.
I have lots of ideas, but as I began to read the comments depression set in. If GM were to put many of the ideas mentioned above to use they would see it as an excuse to jack up the prices to even more ridiculous levels. Go ahead and give people what they want; just give me something above work truck trim that isn’t in Cadillac price territory.
Offer an EREV or hybrid version, based on the RWD electric powertrain of the Cadillac CT6 Hybrid. The battery fits under the truck bed, and will give the Silverado the highest city MPG range for any truck in its price/size class.
They need to go back to the rear hinged back doors, especially on the extended cab. That or redisn the hing for the door to move completely out of the way of the opening.
Lower bed height. Lifting 80lb bags and similar equipment become tiresome at that height.
How is the Silverado looking dated to the F-150 and the Ram 1500? The Ram hasn’t changed much since 2009, Chevy got a new bodystyle in 2014 with a small refresh in 2016. Whoever wrote this article is an idiot.
Sorry, I was forced to revisit the question. I want the step-side version back; I just think they look way cool. I want that really cool floor safe that the Ram has. I want a flat rear floor, or some way to make a flat surface. I want a monster engine; it is impossible to put too big of an engine into an engine bay. I am sick and tired of Ford and now the Italians getting all the press that Chevy should get. There. That’s all I’ve got; plus everything everyone else has already said. I love my Chevy. I just want people who have Fords and Rams to say, deep down in their hearts (cuz they could never admit it), “Dang, I knew I should have waiting before buy this old lug.”
Load leveling rear airbag suspension.
Bring back the C4500 Pickup. Definitely keep the V8 Duramax and Allison transmission
I do agree with some of the previous ideas above, like the flare side trucks!!!! I miss them alot. But along with that, here are some of my personal ideas.
1.) A high performance street truck option that pay homage to the 454SS Silverado of the early 90’s. Something blacked out with red outlined bowtie emblems, a black grille with chrome trim, black and polished 22″ Rally wheels with Black and red bowties, fat wide tires, magnetic ride lowered suspension, huge brembo brakes, 10-speed auto, 4WD, black housing headlamps, black LED tail lamps, aerodynamic hard bed cover, crew cab, short bed, privacy windows, sun roof, factory borla dual exhaust system, 475hp LT1 V8, factory tri-y exhaust manifolds, factory cold air intake, Recaro leather and Alcanatara interior, silver faced gauges with red LED lighting, navigation and a factory kicker/Bose stereo system. This truck should need nothing from the aftermarket whatsoever.
2.) an off road 1500-series truck like a z71 off road edition. Similar to the midnight edition but more rugged. I’m not talking about a raptor fighter or anything else like that but something that has that “truck” look. 33″ Wrangler all terrain tires, a slightly lifted suspension 6.2L V8 engine (455hp LT1), 10 speed auto, terrain management, crew cab, winch, under body armor, running boards with rock guards, rugged body molding, flared fenders, brush guard, sun roof, optional high top camper shell & mattress, auxiliary power supply in the bed & bed lighting, navigation, under seat storage and things of that nature.
3.) a rugged, good, old fashioned work truck that’s tough, dependable, durable and ready and willing to get the job done. a good old fashioned 5.3L push rod v8 and a 10-speed automatic. nothing crazy, just a real good Chevy truck!
4.) A luxury truck (high desert/high country): I know this truck exists already but its worth mentioning. I do believe that power comes along with luxury so this truck should have a 475hp LT1 V8 with a 10-speed automatic, AWD (not 4WD), Magnetic ride, 6-piston brembo brakes with silver calipers and 15″ rotors or larger, 22″ wheels, luxury ultra high performance all season truck tires, chrome bowtie emblems, chrome grilles, LED tail lamps with red lenses, LED/HID headlamps, an amazing interior with soft touch surfaces, soft close doors, a seriously high end stereo system, laminated glass, quiet ride interior, HUD, pedestrian detection , FLIR night vision, lane departure warnings, adaptive headlamps, LED puddle lamps, auto dimming mirrors, privacy windows, automatic sliding tailgate with defrost, heated windshield, heated mirrors, light sensitive windshield that automatically tints like a lot of new glasses do to reduce glare, full interior LED lighting with map lights, dome lights, ambient lighting, glove box lighting, etc. A dual mode dual exhaust should be on this truck as well. This should still have the High Desert bed configuration as well as the bedside compartments like the old Chevrolet Avalanche used to have. This would be the ultimate Chevrolet truck.
5.) The Classic: Think of an old Chevy truck riding down a country back road. A small block v8 with a dual exhaust with turbo mufflers making that classic push rod music as it easily makes its way to town. Comfortable & easy going yet it’s still strong and tough enough to load a bale of hay, logs of fire wood, a young couple out on a country ride, a man and his four legged duck hunting buddy, a month full of groceries, a grandfather and his 8 year old eager eyed fishing partner, or a lifetime of memories. The Classic Chevrolet pickup. That blue bowtie (or the gold one), that first oil change lesson, the first time you ever popped the hood and saw the classic 350-Chevy small block and breathed the smell of gasoline and motor oil into your lungs on a crisp October afternoon that blended with the smell of autumn trees and grass and realized that you were breathing freedom into your lungs. You know, that truck. I think Chevy should build a simple, classic V8 pickup truck that reminds all of us of a simpler time and place in our lives. Of course it will still have all the modern amenities, just without the fancy big wheels or anything. Just a cool, simple, 5.3L V8 powered truck with a subtle yet free flowing dual exhaust system, a bit of chrome trim but not too much, and some simple 18″ modern rally style steel wheels with blue or gold Chevy bowties at the center. Now that would be a truck. I’m sure anyone reading this can see the truck i’m talking about and if you close your eyes and can picture it, you can smell the autumn breeze through the trees and if you can, I know you’re smiling. Dear Chevy, build this truck! Build these trucks!!!! Thank you
First thing is.. fresh design.. not safe reskin.
Take a chance.. last two gens the SUVs got the design and the trucks got screwed
My thought go back to basing the SUVs off the trucks.. let them share sheet metal. Picture current trucks with SUV sheet metal.. would have been much better looking truck
Step out and up.. needs to make Ford shake it head and say.. why didn’t we do that
Self leveling headlights would be great
Some new storage in the bedsides.. like Nissan had but in front of the wheels
. Add air compressor with hose.. put tire tools there.. offer space for different hitches.. many uses for side box.
Bring back a manual trans as extra cost option
Add sports model or throw back models like the heavy half big 10.. and do a step side bed..
Most important is design.. less square wheel wells.. not round.. go back and give them classic style.. current truck made me think Jeep truck 70/80s design
GM needs to take a chance.
Playing it safe is not selling the trucks
Oh how about cost
Lower the cost.. under price ford and bigger bang for the buck..
Make trucks for truck people
I want a nice truck that I can work and still shine up.. and afford to take the wife to dinner
Current truck is nice but doesn’t make me say.. I have to have it.. currently don’t need a truck.. but if I did if buy the GMC.. would look at Ram.. had a 05 F150.. great truck.. 13 mpg and very costly to own.. so wouldn’t do that again.. my other 3 all chevy and great trucks
I’ve been GM Family my whole life, and love them, but please get rid of the square fenders, it’s looks so damn ridiculous when you can only put a certain size tire on and you have that huge gap of nothing but fender. Interior plastics could be built better and the dash board puts a nice glare on the windshield when the sun hits it. All the safety items should already be included, front, side, rear cam, LED lighting on interior in certain locations to accent the inside, better sound system, and they don’t have to go with the big wheels and tires anymore like 22″-24″. To me that takes away from the truck and ride unless it’s a pavement princess.
Procharged 6.2, that’s all it needs
The 1500 is too squatty. Needs another 2 inches of height. Looks too low compared to the f150, ram, and tundra.
More cleavage!
What I’d really like to see is not necessarily bigger rear seats but more comfortable middle seats in back and in front on the trucks with the bench front seats. Rear air vents on trucks with AND without the center console! WHY can’t we have air for the back seat passengers?? Center the steering wheel, move the trailer brake control to the right of the steering wheel and put lockable under-seat storage beneath the rear seat. Oh, and on the Duramax only I want the truck to tell me it needs to regen, then let me decide when to start it. Nothing irritates me like starting a regen a mile from home. Personally, I LOVE the design and styling. Square wheel wells? GOOD. And aluminum? Fine, but keep the bed steel.
New New 2dr Tahoe!!!
Two-tune paint options
I currently own a 2016 GMC Denali 1500 4×4 Crew Cab with the 6.2. With very few exceptions, it is by far the best truck I have ever had. Going forward, I’d like to see the following updates (in no particular order)
Push Button Start
Rear Heat/Air
Heated Seats in the rear
Heated Power Extend/Fold Tow Mirrors
Roof Clearance Lights
A camera that shows me what’s going on behind me while driving forward
Heads Up Display
Dual Exhaust from the factory
The 10 Speed Tranny.
I used to think a Diesel was necessary and it probably still is but after owning the 6.2 gasser, I am not sure I would ever own anything else.
