The GM Authority Take
America’s ravenous hunger for crossover utility vehicles continues to not do any favors for the Sonic sedan and hatchback. As such, we expect Sonic sales to stabilize and remain at the current depressed levels, while Chevy crossover sales — like those of the Trax, Equinox, and Traverse — continue to grow, at least until the crossover craze subsides.

Comments
I’ve left a similar comment on a previous thread, but still haven’t received a response.
What doesn’t seem to be reported here is that the Cruze and Spark both have had sales increases at the same time as the decline in the Sonic sales. Each of those being adjacently sized also have siphoned off sales along with the Trax. Throw in the new sales of the Bolt and there is additional crowding of overlapping markets. Given the Sonic is the oldest of the Cruze, Spark and Bolt and Trax, it’s possible that all four are to blame.
Also, considering the Sonic mid-cycle facelift hasn’t led to increased sales, I’d say it isn’t being well received either. I know that many on the Sonic owners forum have not been impressed with the taming down of the design. Plus as a 2015 Sonic owner myself, part of the reason I chose it was due to its distinctive look. With the more corporate styling, there is no longer anything to justify it over a Cruze (now with Hatch and/or diesel) or a Spark, depending on your needs.
Finally, given the significant price jump to a Trax, I doubt it had a great impact on the lower sales of the Sonic. Platform sharing aside, this market is driven by price, and people who able to pay extra for the higher ride and AWD available on the Trax, weren’t going to buy a Sonic anyway.
While it’s likely that the Sonic is being attacked from multiple angles, including CUV’s, I find it false statement to continuously lay the blame for Sonic sales solely or primarily on the CUV’s. This is a great website and I expected to see more thoughtful analysis, especially from Alex. It’s not like Mr. Luft to hammer home this correlation as causation reasoning without considering the other factors I mentioned.
Just a quick note from a dealer perspective, the Sonic has little to no lease support. Our metro market leases the vast majority of the Cruze and Trax leaving a Sonic purchase in the dust.
I have 2014 it not worth the price i wish i never bought my
Hear is the problem with the new sonic it looks like crap i have a 2014 and love it but the trade in value is nothing
Can you share more along these lines? It’s proven extremely useful for me.
