The GM Authority Take

We attribute the continued decrease in Malibu sales volume to the continued shift in purchase dynamics, in which consumers prefer crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) as the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and coupes. Whether the CUV craze is permanent or temporary has yet to be determined, which is why we expect the Malibu to continue seeing depressed sales volumes in the near- to medium-term future — a rather unfortunate circumstance given the quality of the ninth-generation model.

  1. The 2018 Camry and Accord are also going to take many sales away from this car. The Camry has already been reported as having 203 HP std on most models and 206 on the HSE. The V6 is reported to make 301 ponies. Both engines also use the combined DI/port injection system which should prove better for long term use and mileage will be better across the board with a std 8 speed automatic. The Accord will continue with it’s more efficient CVT and 1.5T.

The current Malibu with it’s weaker 160 HP 1.5T and older 6 speed will be soon left in the dust and I fear sales. The 2019 had better be a big improvement if they want to be taken seriously.

    1. The Malibu needs the 9 speed auto asap. A tweak up to 180-190HP would be very welcome. Nobody is talking about it, but they need to look at building a hatchback/wagon version to increase overall sales.
