The GM Authority Take

The ongoing market shift towards crossovers and SUVs continues to take its toll on Impala sales volume in May, as was also the case in the first quarter of the year. Recent comments by GM CEO Mary Barra have put into question the Impala’s future after the current model, as the current-generation Chevrolet Malibu, produced at the GM Fairfax factory in Kansas, has grown to be fairly close in size to the Impala, which is produced at the GM Detroit-Hamtramck factory outside of Detroit as well as on the Flex line of the GM Oshawa factory in Ontario, Canada.

  1. I honestly don’t think they should drop the impala at all. I mean if we look at it, Honda doesn’t rally have a full size sedan as the accord now is pretty much a tweener sized. Toyota still have Avalon but god who knows how many abalone have been sold as not everyone wants a Camry. FCA doesn’t really have a midsize sedan so they’re relying on the 300/charger to do the midsize/full size sales. Hyundai and Kia both still have fullsizers but again who knows how many have been sold compare to their midsize counterpart. Same with Nissan. Some people do prefer more luxury stuff that’s offered in their fullsize flagship than what’s been offered on the midsize counterpart despite the fact most fullsizers do share platforms with their midsizers

  2. There is going to be next generation Impala. Its cousin LaCrosse just got an overhaul for much lower volume. GM needs Impala to split the bill and the better the next generation is the better the final numbers ($) will be.

  5. Bye , Bye Impala ! i believe two things are killing sales of the car , 1) AWD should have been offered as an option, it’s stablemate the XTS does but that would have added $1500.00 + to the cost and maybe Chevy didn’t think it would sell , and 2) our fascination with SUV’s .
There ia a member of the family that owns one and loves it and it is a decent looking car that is loaded with options . But it will be a big decision for GM on whether to keep this car with sales tanking every month .

    1. I doubt AWD would really make much difference in Impala sales. It doesn’t seem to be helping the Taurus and the new LaCrosse is still well behind the previous version despite offering AWD. Everybody is still in this dreary SUV/CUV obsession and unless that changes cars will soon become a niche product.

  6. The Impala is a historical name as the Suburban, Corvette, Camaro and… Chevy can’t stop it. It rather has to rebuild the next generation on the next Alpha RWD architecture with AWD options and ans SS version with a 6.2 V8.

  7. Never been disappointed over the years with our Impalas. My first car was a ’62. Wife’s current LTZ purchased new gets lots of compliments.
I mentioned Malibu, she said no way, no V6 for one thing and the looks. We did not shop for anything else. It has powerful name recognition.

  8. My 30 year old nephew has one and likes it a great deal. He has two young kids and there is plenty of room. Definitely skewing the age demographic.

  9. The steering wheel needs an overhaul the most, imo.

    It looks bloated and dated.

The exterior is nice on current MY Impalas, but the interior needs some help.

  10. Notice that LaCrosse sales have been going up each month this year as it is a more fresh design with newer engines and transmissions and greater tech and feature content. The Impala is now in it’s 5th model year with no exterior, interior or powertrain changes from 2014. It’s not surprising sales keep getting softer each year.

  11. Chevrolet does not seem to be interested in marketing the Impala. They seem to be putting all of their effort to push the Malibu. The Malibu is a small car and I like a large car. My 2015 Impala fits that bill nicely. If Chevy abandons the Impala, I’ll look elsewhere for a FULL SIZE automobile.
