Chevy Equinox Sales Decrease 1.6 Percent To 20,908 Units In May 2017

Chevrolet Equinox sales decreased in the United States and increased in Canada in May 2017.

Chevrolet Equinox deliveries in the United States totaled 20,908 units in May 2017, a slight decrease of 1.6 percent or 344 units. In the first five months of 2017, Equinox sales increased 2.5 percent to 104,272 units.

In Canada, Chevy Equinox sales totaled 2,877 deliveries in May 2017, an increase of 41.6 percent compared to May 2016. In the first five months of the year, Equinox sales in Canada increased 50.2 percent to 11,127 units.

The slight decrease in Equinox sales volume is to be expected so long as the all-new third-generation model continues its staggered launch cadence across the U.S. As such, the majority of the 20,908 Equinoxes sold in May are of the second-generation Chevy Equinox, which is the oldest vehicle in its segment. As such, its impressive that — despite its great age — the model managed to move almost as many units in May as it did a year ago, a turn of events enabled by the great reputation of the Equinox in the marketplace as well as consumers’ newfound love affair with crossovers at the expense of other vehicle types, such as sedans.

Meanwhile, the completely-overhauled 2018 Chevy Equinox is now launching across the U.S. Featuring an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture (GM’s D2 platform) that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the second-gen model, the new Equinox gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety. In addition, the 2018 Equinox gets an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model.

We continue to expect that the new Equinox will sell in even higher volumes than the model it replaces once it completes its launch, so long as GM can keep up with demand. We believe that the automaker is capable of meeting increased demand for the new Equinox, since it has dedicated the GM CAMI factory run by GM Canada to production of the new Equinox, while moving production of the new Terrain to the San Luis Potosi factory operated by GM Mexico.
