Global Cadillac Sales Up 33.8 Percent To 29,738 Units In May 2017

Global sales of new Cadillac vehicles totaled 29,738 units in May 2017, an increase of 33.8 percent year-over-year, marking the 12th consecutive month of double-digit percentage growth for the brand, and the continued execution of the brand’s globalization strategy.

“Cadillac has earned double-digit monthly gains in global sales growth for an entire year,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen.  “Not only have we increased sales volume with the success of vehicles such as the XT5 luxury crossover, but we also continue to see consumers selecting a richer mix of models, keeping Cadillac’s average transaction prices amongst the highest for a mainstream luxury brand.”

In the first five months of 2017, global Cadillac sales have increased 32 percent to 136,525 units.

May 2017 Cadillac Sales By Model

Cadillac did not provide sales on a per-model basis in May. It did, however, state that sales in the midsize luxury crossover space (the Cadillac XT5) increased 43.6 percent in the first five months of 2017. Since launching in mid-2016, the XT5 has become the brand’s best-seller worldwide, with global May sales totaling 11,530 units.

Sales of Cadillac’s ATS sport sedan and coupe models grew 45.2 percent for the month, while sales of the XTS luxury sedan rose 20.7 percent.

May 2017 Cadillac Sales By Market

Cadillac sales rose in the United States, Canada and China in May 2017:

  • Cadillac sales in the United States increased 9.2 percent to 13,211 units:
    • Retail sales increased 9.8 percent to 12,708 units
    • Fleet sales decreased 4.2 percent to 503 units
  • Cadillac sales in China increased 65.2 percent to 14,154 units
  • Cadillac sales in Canada increased 57.9 percent to 1,435 units, representing the brand’s best-ever total and retail sales ever
  • Cadillac sales in all other regions (ROW, or Rest of World) increased 43 percent to 938 units

Unlike in the first four months of 2017, Cadillac did not provide individual sales figures for Mexico, Europe and South Korea or the Middle East; instead, it has bundled sales from those markets in the single ROW (Rest of World) line item for May.

  2. Cadillac needs to creat flagships other than the Germen-Sport performance fad…..the ATS, CTS and CT6 are just boring Germen-Sport sedans…..Cadillac needs a flagship sedan that is BOLD, POWERFULL, ROOMY, and COMFORTABLE…..not a bigger CTS or bigger performance sports sedan.

  3. The XT5 is the fuel that is helping Cadillac right now . The public seems to like this replacement of the SRX which was Cadillacs top seller for years with little change . I believe that is why there are hints of the old body style from the side profile as to keep a portion of what worked before . But a departure from the sharp A&S trend for the rest of the vehicle with a smoother front end and the rear seems much more integrated into the design of the rest of the body .
Cadillac does need a flagship sedan but not at the moment , they need to get their SUV’s to market first . What would be in Cadillac’s best interest is having a performance SUV in the mid-size segment , many automakers have such a vehicle in their portfolio .
Also the XTS , up over 20% , Cadillac did the right thing not killing off that car and when the major refresh comes out for 2018 I think it just might clip the wings of the CT6 in sales even though the two cars are going after a completely different buyer .

    1. I don’t buy the argument XTS and CT6 are different buyers, even as much Cadillac would want that so. People go in to the dealership to look at the “big”, flashy Cadillac. They go in to check out both, but leave with the XTS. I’ve seen it too many times.

      1. I believe you’re right about that. As you say, both are large Cadillac sedans. And both are quite similar in size. All the supposed major differences are mechanical; with some cosmetic differences, but that’s about to change with the introduction of the refreshed XTS. And with Cadillac’s virtually nonexistent marketing of the CT6, most potential customers are simply unaware of what the CT6 has to offer, or why it’s more expensive than the similarly sized XTS. At the end of the day, the XTS is the cheaper, larger Cadillac sedan, and the customer that’s interested in this kind of Cadillac is likely going to go buy what offers the most for the money.

        1. this is why FWD is better than RWD….if Cadillac have enough balls Cadillac could do a bigger, much more appealing and more advanced FWD flagship sedan than the current XTS…the question is….can they create a large FWD sedan worth the $90K+ price tag ??

  4. ya we can expect a Halo flagship sedan by the mid 2020s well after Cadillac have its CUV portfolio done by than we can see a radical design departure from the current A&S design theme….I believe that A&S is getting old and it’s been watered down since the early 2000s and puting softer edges on it just makes it look reather boring than aggersive….I loved the Elmeraj and hopefully we will see a sedan verson of it…..the CT6 doesn’t do anything to WOW people….its just a LARGER and more BORING CTS with cheaper materials…I believe that the CT6 is a BIG FAIL.

  5. The ‘big’ news here is that China has a bigger volume market for Cadillac than the US. No need to ‘wow’ US customers because it needs to be Chinese tastes they appeal to. The growth potential in China is huge; the US is a mature vehicle market.

  6. fleetman…if that’s the case….Cadillac has no bussiness to exist in the USA.

    1. No, there is an increase in US YTD sales of 0.9%… that is amazing! (he said sarcastically)

US sales still make up 43% of worldwide sales, so there is still ‘some’ relevance.

      Reply
      1. The relevance of the US market is not under question as Cadillac generates 90% of its profit from US despite the increased Chinese sales volume, the profits from which need to be split with SAIC.

  7. Despite their Success in China Cadillac need to be a hit in the US. They need to again become number one in their home Country before they will be taken seriously by the rest of the world. I hope and believe in due time that will happen. I know there are plenty nay sayers out there but with the right products and right marketing I believe it can be done. Don’t know if I will be around to see it but given time as I said before it can happen.

We must remember it is harder to rebuild a reputation than to build one. This is where Cadillac is now after 30 or more years of disappointing people it is not an easy task.

  9. The XTS was designed more as the ” traditional ” Cadillac , smoother ride full of the latest tech . The CT6 was developed to be more German in ride quality .
Price is a huge factor in that traditional Cadillac buyer coming out of a DTS and I agree that if the two cars are compared together they will tend to go for the cheaper car .
On the other hand the ” non-traditional ” new to the division Cadillac buyer is more likely to go for the CT6 as that is the intention to get that new buyer that wants a more sporty experience , meaning the steering dynamics and how it feels more planted to the road . Cadillacs apple and oranges . Both cars are good in their own space .

    1. Zach, I completely agree regarding your comparison of the XTS and CT6. They make look similar in size and shape, but they are for two different types of drivers.

To some extent though, each may be a little “compromised” in appeal. Reason being, the XTS was meant to be a replacement for both the DTS and STS, even though it’s now seen as a replacement for the DTS (only). And the CT6 was developed with the thought that the XTS was going to be dropped.

Since both XTS and CT6 are here for the forseeable future, it would be nice if each went a little further to appeal to their intended market. So it would be great if the new XTS had an even softer ride (more like the DTS ride) and had a stronger minimum engine (again more like the DTS Northstar V8 which was even in the base model). The CT6 could use a more refined base engine and perhaps advertise it’s German-like sport-handling intentions a little more, to distinguish itself from the XTS (Should they call the CT6 “The big Cadillac that zigs?” No!).

It still seems to me that there’s a battle for the soul of Cadillac, between the more traditional-American approach and the more German-approaching one. The German-like side seems to have been winning ever since at least Lutz was GM’s CEO if not headed that way even earlier (the Catera, etc.). But the pendulum could swing the other way toward traditional luxury rather than sport-luxury (especially in the big cars) and it would be nice if Cadillac maintained a foot in that door, going forward.

      1. I think thare would be a variety of Germen sports luxury and traditional soft riding luxury….the CT6 shouldn’t be a top flagship….the XTS should be it.

      2. Cadillac should appeal to both markets. Cadillac has a long standing installed customer base for the luxury car. Cad top brass wants to be a sports car company. Do both. Money is money. Cadillac should not to be turning anyone away or off.

I fully expected to be in a Cadillac from the cradle to the grave. The CTS I have now may be the last Cadillac until that shiny black Cadillac that takes me on the last ride.

Bouncing me around on RFT and funner tuned chassis won’t bother me a bit then. Blow out a RFT with no spare too. Flip me over it it makes them happy!

        1. Cadillac shouldn’t be a sport-performance brand….that is what’s destroying the Cadillac brand.

          1. Rye,

Management seems to want the sport performance cars even if they are backing up on dealers’ lots. I hope they give some consideration for the luxury ride as there is a market here. They may not want us be we are here and have $$ to spend.

  10. I think they should leave the treditional passenger sedan sagmont to the FWD side and just make the ATS, CTS and CT6 high performance sports cars that are not sedans…maybe pony cars like the Camaro……. Cadillacs RWD cars don’t belong in the passenger car sagmont….. who wants to be thrown around in the back seat for the sake of Germen style rides and cutting corners and performance….the ATS, CTS and CT6 have no business in the sedan space…..as the ATS and CTS have cramped back seats and the CT6 having a too harsh of a ride.
