The Cadillac ATS-V.R landed two drivers on the GT podium at last weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge doubleheader at Road America. Michael Cooper, driver of the No. 8 Cadillac, finished third on Saturday, while Johnny O’Connell in the No. 3 Cadillac secured the same spot on the podium the next day.
Cooper entered the weekend the overall points leader in the Pirelli World Challenge GT drivers’ championship after last weekend’s races – a lead he’s now ceded to Patrick Long. Cooper’s Cadillac Racing teammate, Johnny O’Connell, entered the weekend in eighth in the standings.
“All of the fast guys are very, very competitive,” said O’Connell after Sunday’s race. Saturday, he says, “was frustrating after a first lap spin, especially when you’re fighting for the win. This has not been a season of great luck for us. Congratulations to Adderly (Fong) for Saturday’s win as he put on a really strong drive.
“Today (Sunday), I really needed Adderly to throw some moves at Patrick (Long) in order for me to close the gap that I had to. I think if I had a long run, I might have been able to get in there and make things interesting. You’re able to plan an attack and monitor your pace accordingly but I needed that seventeen minutes” of race time lost to a red flag, he said.
