The GM Authority Take

Being the oldest vehicle in its class, the Cadillac ATS continues to suffer at the hands of newer and more modern competitors, such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3/4 Series and the Audi A4/A5 lineup. During the month, the ATS family occupied fifth place in terms of overall sales volume in the luxury sport-compact segment — behind BMW 3/4 series in first place, Mercedes-Benz C-Class family in second, Audi A4/A5 family in third, and Lexus IS/RC in fourth. Only the Alfa Romeo Giulia was behind the ATS family in terms of cumulative sales volume. Except for the BMW, all of these rivals are newer than the ATS line.

Another factor that could be impacting sales of the ATS family is the ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics that favors crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) at the expense of sedans and coupes. However, the segment was down only 5.34 percent to 25,442 units in May, whiles sales of the ATS fell a much steeper 21.9 percent. Here’s to hoping that the ATS’ replacement — which will likely be called Cadillac CT3 — will turn things around for Cadillac in the world’s most largest luxury segment.

  1. What a freaking waste.. this is a failure of the marketing department for not promoting the ATS successfully because the ATS was developed to be the answer to BMW’s 3-series and despite being one of the best cars General Motors has made in the last 50 years, sales are going down instead of improving as Cadillac needs to bring some excitement even if it means building special edition models and taking them to the Nurburgring track.

  2. grow the ATS and CTS and CT6 in size….get rid of the 4 cylinder engine and give them all smooth rides and more powerful engines.

    ATS: 186 inches….from $35.000.
    CTS: 198 inches….from $45.000.
    CT6: 208 inches…from $80.000.

    XTS….death.

    1. The next ATS is already getting an increase in length… but the 3 Series isn’t much longer, yet still is the #1 seller in the segment.

The CTS and CT6 are fine exactly where they are. Maybe an inch or two of added wheelbase for both would create more space between the two and the next, longer ATS.

The XTS doesn’t need to die… it needs to continue being the cash cow that is milked for all its worth for those who are not so much into the “sport-luxury” side of the equation.

    2. Rye Shelton, smh, come on dude. You’re completely opposite, today, man. Anyhow, XTS before all of those, it needs to be the cornerstone, well CT6 can stick around, it’s p. slick looking at times, but it plays second fiddle, in my opinion. The CUV/SUV trend will not continue forever. The current ATS and CTS are hampered by their backseat size. When checking them out at the dealership, it’s the first thing noticed most times. Nobody wants a small backseat Cadillac.

Also, as to the 3-Series, it’s a nice little car. But it works for BMW, not for something like Cadillac. 3 series is pretty much equivalent to a Honda Civic here in California, you see them everywhere.

  3. the is too much overlap between the CTS and CT6….maybe leave the treditional American luxury to FWD and leave RWD to Germen sports coupes….personaly I’m not a fan of the Germen sports cars and I certainly don’t like the low profile tires.

  4. This comparison is so lopsided . The Mercedes and BMW are newer thatn the ATS , so yah the sales will continue to tank . The ATS looked at alone is a fine automobile but until Cadillac replaces it the ATS is going to continue to falter .
This segment is ruled by the Germans and while Cadillac is trying to be more European that is fine for small cars but not big cars , that is something Cadillac is going to learn the hard way by lost sales of it’s ” flagship ” .

    1. Not exactly correct, the current 3 series (F30) has been around since 2011, and is, in fact, a little older than the ATS. Yes, the oldest car in this category is the top seller, that is the 3/4 series. GM seems to have neglected this car, as it is the only one among its competitors that does not offer a turbo 6, not including the ATS-V (the rumoured Vsport never materialize). BMW have sold many thousands of 3/4 series with turbo 6 (335i/340i) and Cadillac have clearly left thousand of sales over the life of the ATS, as the turbo 6 is the sweet spot in this category.

  5. I don’t care about the ATS….its Cadillacs flagship that need to be fixed….Cadillacs flagship seems to be tarnished at this point…..Cadillac seems to be too fucased on German performance vehicles.
