The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 marks General Motors’ return to the off-road segment. Sure, there have been plenty of trucks with the Z71 package, but the coveted ZR2 badge means business on the trails.
Like Hummers of yesteryear, the Colorado ZR2 is definitely capable, so we found in our first drive of the Colorado ZR2. However, MotorWeek also had a go, and it found much to like as well.
Its on-road manners hold Chevrolet’s promise that the Colorado ZR2 is a truck for serious off-road use, but that it can also be driven to work the very next day. Thanks in a small part to the DSSV dampers hiding beneath—the first time such technology has been applied to an off-road truck.
Locking front and rear differentials, a higher ground clearance and all the right protection for essential components make it totally up to snuff for the trails. However, the ZR2 shouldn’t really be compared to the F-150 Raptor. While the Raptor will blast through sand dunes, the Colorado ZR2 is happier rock climbing.
