General Motors will attempt to make life easier for fleet and business customers as it rolls out new connected car data plans. In the process, it will become the first automaker to offer such a plan.
This summer, the plans will allow business customers to activate OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspots in trucks, cars and SUVs and partake in data pooling, unlimited data and utilize centralized billing.
“Customers using an OnStar 4G LTE connection can help make their company vehicle drivers more customer-focused and productive, so the growth potential is huge,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of GM Fleet at the GM Fleet Solutions Summit in Las Vegas. “Working with AT&T, we will enable our business customers to receive all the benefits of high-speed connectivity with more flexibility and less paperwork using the shared unlimited data plan capability.”
Real-time data can be shared across multiple vehicles in the field with connections up to 50 feet away from the hotspot. The corporate invoicing can also add plans to existing AT&T accounts.
Chevrolet most recently added the option for unlimited data through its 4G LTE service, and for non-business users, the brand made it easier to switch to an unlimited plan altogether.
