The GM Authority Take

The decrease in U.S. Volt sales volume came after 18 consecutive months of growth, a circumstance created by high demand for the vehicle in April 2016. It’s also possible that the recently-launched Chevy Bolt EV is responsible for cannibalizing some Volt sales.

  2. 1,800 sales is not bad for a car GM doesn’t advertise outside California, and not sure GM even advertises
    it there anymore.

With Bolt EV needing to sell that 30,000 units GM plotted, whilst still being rolled out to new states
this far into it’s existence…Is it any wonder Volt isn’t selling?

My GM dealer tells me they lose money on each one – that GM collects ZEV credits for these cars
which, added to compliance – are the main reasons they exist in the first place.

So that 200,000 unit ceiling on the $7500 tax credit is looming. Any wonder why Chevrolet TV ads
that even mention Green Car Of The Year Awards and Car of The Year awards don’t even show
a Volt? I even saw one Chevy ad where for one brief second, the blue car shown from behind
is a Volt – but the much longer, fully-lit frames that followed showed a BLUE CRUZE in it’s place!

You see – the Volt is an engineering marvel. If people truly knew what a great car it is, and how
it works – vs. Prius and Prius Prime and every other PHEV out there…They would beat a path
to Chevy dealers. But Volt is the embarrassing stepchild, the secret smart kid hidden in the
    attic at GM.

Since Volt is built on Cruze’s D2XX platform – GM could’ve truly given it Cruze’s back seat
room and headroom. But that would cut into Cruze sales. So why hurt your big selling,
high margin compact sedan by showing the world another compact sedan they build
with mind-boggling 53 miles pure electric range and 42 MPG afterward switching to
    gas power?

Bolt EV and Volt are unique types of compliance cars. Collect those ZEV credits,
GM – and run a fire sale at the end of the product cycle to blow them out the door.

    It’s a shame.
