Chevrolet Sonic deliveries in the United States totaled 1,645 units in April 2017, a decrease of 67.8 percent compared to 5,102 units sold in April 2016. In the first four months of 2017, sales of the subcompact sedan and hatchback have decreased 47.7 percent to 9,265 units.

In Canada, the Sonic recorded 558 deliveries in April 2017, a decrease of 19.6 percent compared to April 2016. In the first four months of the year, Sonic sales totaled 1,456 units in Canada, an increase of 5.8 percent compared to the first four months of 2016.

America’s ravenous hunger for crossover utility vehicles continues to take its toll on the Sonic family. As such, we expect Sonic sales to either continue sliding or remain at the current depressed levels, while Chevy crossover sales — like those of the Trax, Equinox, and Traverse — to continue to grow, at least until the crossover craze comes to a halt.

There hasn’t been as many cash incentives toward the Sonic as there has been toward the Malibu, Equinox, Traverse, and the Trax. Increase Fuel economy, or Replace the engine with a more Powerful one. 138HP? 125lb/ft of Torque? Nah I’m good. I’ll take the Smart ForTwo
The incentives part is absolutely true.
A few thoughts:
1. The power figures you mention are from the base 1.8L… the up-level 1.4 Turbo makes 148 pound-feet of torque. Both the 1.8 and 1.4T are archaic… they will get replaced in the next-gen that will make more power and be more fuel efficient.
2. The Sonic (and Spark) represent basic transportation. Fuel economy is the highest consideration. Power figures are way down on the buying consideration list.
Not to mention that the new Sonic styling looks like a Chevy but missed the mark IMO. The old styling wasn’t universally loved but it was unique and people do like it even if it looks a bit insect like. With the 2017 Sonic re-style, its like trying to take a chick car and turning it into a dude car. (i.e. 2012 VW beetle) My wife drives a 2015 Sonic and if we were looking for a new one I would upgrade to the Cruze hatch for very similar money.
The styling on the revised model missed the mark according to who and/or whom? The revised model appeals to a substantially greater customer base than the pre-facelift one, which was cool but whose market perspective was very limited based on “extreme” styling factors.
I wouldn’t say that the previous Sonic appealed to a limited customer base, or that the styling was “extreme”. It was expressive, and distinctly its own, which is something that was lost in the refresh. If the new Sonic appeals to a wider swath of people then it is appealing to those that wouldn’t buy it anyway, and has perhaps alienated those that would have.
The 2017 Chevrolet Sonic 5-Door Auto Hatchback was my very first car I bought as a college grad present. By default it has the RS package so I added the Convenience package for well…convenience. It has the base 1.8L engine but for me it has a lot more power than what is listed. For Fuel economy I get 34mpg City & 38mpg Highway. I’ll be honest I expected to be disappointed by the fuel economy and Instead It’s been amazing. I love the looks of the 2017 Sonic now compared to the previous years. Having the money for a Malibu, Impala, and Trax etc. why did I choose the Sonic? Simple for me bigger is not always better in both efficiency and quality which is why test driving is important. When I test drove the Sonic the quality was amazingly high, the cabin is amazingly quiet. I’ve test drove a BMW Z3 & Z4 and they sound like tin cans when closing the doors and lot of road noise. No I don’t expect anyone to take my word for it but to test drive the car yourself and you’ll see why one would love such a car. You would be surprised what you can find when investing in a $15k to $20k car compared to a $50k to $70k luxury car. I’ve seen the quality of many luxury cars deteriorate while the quality of nice practical cars increases and become more refined. 4 people stared into my car with awe when putting gas. I will always educate others about this rare gem. It just comes to show bigger is not always better.
