The GM Authority Take

We attribute the continued decrease in Malibu sales volume to the ongoing shift in consumer behavior dynamics, in which consumers prefer crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) as the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and coupes. Whether the CUV craze is permanent or temporary is up in the air, which is why we expect the Malibu to continue to see depressed sales volumes in the near- to medium-term future, which is a rather unfortunate event given the quality of the current/ninth-generation vehicle.

  1. I’ve rented every midsizer on the lot. Malibu is good, far better than Fusion, Sonota, Altima. Surprisingly, 200 is a real rival with slightly better handling but without Malibu’s better visibility and tranny.

    1. I rented a Malibu LS a few weeks ago, and I didn’t think it was anything special. The 1.5T with start-stop was unrefined and noisy. It was definitely a let down in comparison to its previous self. For a few thousand more, the Impala is a superior product.

  2. My Malibu is a beautiful, stylish car. If GM got rid of auto stop they would sell a gazillion of them.

  3. Stop/start is the single most annoying and useless thing they have introduced that does virtually nothing for MPG unless you’re sitting in manhattan idling all day of course. Note that Honda, Hyundai and Nissan with their mid size rivals are achieving the same or better MPG as the Malibu but with larger more powerful 2.4 and 2.5 engines that do not utilise stop/start. I guess annoying the customer and lower sales is more important to profits over all else Barra. And I thought the new GM was listening to customers. So much for that!

  4. At one point, the Mailbu was the prettiest flower on the bush, but GM keeps wanting to change its looks. If you can’t make it prettier than it already is, then leave it alone or hire better designers.
