The GM Authority Take

2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Launch

The decline in cumulative U.S. Colorado sales volume is surprising given the nameplate’s stellar sales performance since the launch of the second-generation Colorado in 2015. Like in March, we are inclined to attribute the decline in Colorado deliveries to Chevrolet Silverado sales cutting into Colorado sales, as incentives on the full-size Chevy Silverado family were very lucrative (up to 16 percent) in April, while being very limited on the Colorado. We believe that the same circumstance also negatively impacted sales of the Colorado’s brother — the GMC Canyon.

April saw the launch of the 2017 Colorado ZR2, as the extreme off-road variant began shipping to dealers.

  1. Read one article that the 8″ infocenter could be updated with the “Apple Talk” application on the 2016 Colorado Trucks. I have a 2015 model that I took into Mortiz Chevrolet, Fort Worth, TX. They had the android but not the Apple Talk version. When will the many 2015 drivers get an opportunity to use updated technology on the infocenter.

  2. Might sell more if there was a model that was NOT designed for off road… Closer to the ground.. MUCH better ride etc. I have a 2015 Silverado and it rides great. Friend’s 2015 Colorado on the SAME roads is a night mare.

I couldn’t disagree with you more. I own a Chevy Colorado and it runs great on roads and highways. MotorTrend and other car/truck reviewers feel the same. One of our work trucks is a 2015 Chevy Silverado. All my coworkers agree it has a great ride both on and off road.

  3. Well the greatest issue is that many people have very limited selection on dealer lots. High sales in Jan And Feb depleated many inventories and left many dealers with out the crew short beds that make up most sales.

Also many have orders in that have been taking up to 12 weeks and more if it is a Diesel.

I bought in March only because I got a really good deal on the Denali I wanted and it was the only one in the color I wanted in several hundred miles. I just got lucky otherwise I would have had to order like many on the forum.

Note full size sale have played a small Paarl as I considered one. But generally those of us wanting a mid size are driven by size not price, this truck is the right size for us and that is why we buy them.

  4. Scott3 is right too.. beside needing a more road worthy model (one that would be comfy cross country and hi end inside) the selection of colors and equipment sucks.. They have no stock. Also back seat area.. lift the seat and there is NOT clear floor space… TOO many other similar trucks coming out… Ranger soon.. watch.. this will tank cause GM is NOT listening.

    1. Well as a owner I do not agree. The GMC SLT and Denali are very good road worthy cross country trucks.

Hell I have everything up to a power, Lumbar and vented seats to heated steering wheel.

The back seat area has a large storage area that I store many things in including a decent size compressor.

As it is GM leads nearly all reviews. They also are due for a refresh in 2019 around the time the Ford arrives.

Note too the Ford at this point will only come in a crew and may not even offer a long bed.

The only real challenge will be from unibody CUV based models as this class attracts many from the CUV segment. It is split 1/3 CUV buyer and 2/3 Truck buyer.

GM I listening to some one as they are working to increase productivity already on three shifts. There are little to no incentives and most dealer are short on inventory. The full size truck are normally 50 or more and the mid size is normally 1-5 at many dealers and if they have more they are long beds that do sell as well or over priced Diesels.

GM will be fine and will remain a growing leader in this segment. But with the CUV segment there will always be tough competition.

  5. Seems to me they are still selling at near capacity for production. Couple that with the roll out of the ZR2, and I think they are selling fine. I’d really like to know the nominal capacity from the plant, since there only true gains over the last year coincide with shifting van production out to enable more capacity. The interesting comments above… couple comments point for more high end models which drive cost up, while others point out the out the door price is really close to 1/2 ton market. I believe they have done their best to thread in enough variety without encroaching too much.

    1. I agree, the Colorado is a very strong vehicle. I just purchased a diesel Z71 4×4 in January’. I finally got to see the ZR2 in person last week and traded mine in for ZR2 Duramax just this past a Monday. I love it. I’ll have to wait to see the fuel numbers. So far it looks like it may have dropped just a but not sure since i am not even halfway down my first tank.
