The GM Authority Take

The XT5 continues to reap the benefits of current market trends in which consumers favor crossovers over sedans. The vehicle’s March and April sales performance enabled it to occupy second place in terms of cumulative sales volume in the midsize luxury front-drive crossover space directly behind the Lexus RX, which accounted for 7,839 deliveries during the month.

Sales Numbers - Mid-Size Luxury Front-Drive CUV Sales - April 2017 - United States

MODEL APR 17 / APR 16 APRIL 17 APRIL 16 YTD 17 / YTD 16 YTD 17 YTD 16
RX -10.59% 7,839 8,767 -9.47% 29,480 32,563
XT5 +1,709.54% 5,501 304 +6,135.20% 18,955 304
MDX -14.39% 4,052 4,733 -10.07% 15,008 16,689
MKX -11.10% 2,339 2,631 +5.25% 10,345 9,829

Even so, Cadillac remains absent from the sport-luxury midsize crossover space occupied by market stalwarts like the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class (née ML-Class), Jaguar F-Pace, and Porsche Cayenne.

  1. That’s good.

But given that it’s a newbie, isn’t it a little misleading that posting a 6000% YTD increase over 2016 a little misleading?

It’s good that the market is attracted to
the XT5 – but it seems like a No Meaningful Figure is called for, vs comparing 18,000 to 354…

Glad it’s found a market (no surprise), but it’s a little like a baseball player getting called up last Sept, playing every day in 2017, and pointing out his OBP is up 6000% vs last year.

    2018 vs 2017 will be a better measurement than ’17 vs ’16.

Still, good numbers so far. Any comparison to ’16 seems like a NMF to some of us, though. That said, I’m seeing a lot of them on the street, so keep it going.

    1. True. A better comparison would be the total sales of the XT5 & SRX for April 2016 vs 2017.

  2. The XT5 has started to gain traction in it’s segment and there is no reason that at some point it even outsells the RX as the year progresses . One thing Cadillac shouldn’t do is not give it a significant refresh in a year or two . When the XT4 comes out with hints of the ” new ” face of Cadillac that would be time for a facial for the XT5 , keeping it fresh .
I drive by a Cadillac dealership every day where they have a row of the 5’s and each day another one is gone from the lot .
JDN may not be to disappointed too see many driveways with their new crossover parked there .

  3. I expect Cadillac to convert the XT5 into a hybrid or EREV version as the CT6.

  4. Anybody have info on the ‘Continuously Variable Real Time Damping’? I can’t find anything other than it sounding like the system Cadillac used before Magnetic Ride Control. I’m thinking about buying a GMC Acadia, and I’m wondering if this is worth getting. If it were MagnaRide it would be a no-brainer.
