The GM Authority Take

The drop in Silverado sales during the month of March is concerning, given the numerous incentives being offered by Chevrolet, which included an offer for 15 percent off MSRP, among other offers. What’s perhaps even more troublesome is that the competition — specifically the Ford F-Series and FCA’s Ram Pickup — each saw sales volumes increase during the month as the Silverado and its brother — the GMC Sierra — saw sales volumes fall.

  1. They are jacking up the price every year a d then giving discounts. GM trucks are by far the most expensive. It’s time for GM to wake up and look at the competitions prices.

    1. Do you mean they are pushing up the price (I assume recommended retail) on each new model year (MY) or year of manufacture (MAN)?

If it’s pushed up each year of manufacture that’s just plain sneaky. They have been known to achieve this by making Optional features into Standard fitment for a small premium over the outgoing year’s vehicles. Customers need to be hypervigilant about this tactic, so that the price is comparing apples with apples on the showroom floor.

I have no problem with a Model Year increase as long as I see benefits and improvements worth the price differential, over the previous Model Year.

  2. They will continue to fall with Ram outselling the bow tie half of this year !! WHY?? Because GM wants to be the king of double cabs. Why would I lease or buy a double when i can get a full Ram or F150 crew for the same price? GM has been known to ad standard features to up the price. My neighbor got the Ram (first the lease was the same as a crew Ram) even though his Uncle could get him GMS and you have to move up to an SLT/LTZ and a certain package to get a heated steering wheel WT$ is up with that. Trucks are primarily grocery getters in most markets Ford and Ram figured it out. The guy I buy trucks from at the GM dealer said their factory rep said “They can’t continue to sell them at this price ” that was 2 years ago. GM the slow lumbering giant that none of their execs drive trucks. GM will fall close to 3rd place in truck sales

  3. As a GM Fleet Manager, I must say that GM prices are getting ridiculous, especially the way they package options. You can get more standard features in a Ford or Ram for the same price. If you add the features to a GM to match, the price is higher than Ford or Ram. Plus the way they package and only make certain features available is also ridiculous. Not having a 6.2L available in an LT is stupid. Not being able to get skid plates unless you either order a Z71 or order a truck as a fleet unit is ridiculous.

    Then there’s:
    1. No floor shift available.
    2. No rear HVAC vents (these are family vehicles for a lot of buyers)
    3. Drab interior with very little trim accents and those that they have are either really back plastic wood or silver. Plus there’s no door trim accents, inserts, etc that upscale the interior. Worst interior of all full size truck now except the Tundra.
    4. Wax coated frame – we have new trucks on the lot with wax peeling off in corners
    5. Just a new body over a very old frame as the frame is basically the same as a 2007-2013 with minor tweaks.
    6. Vibration issues – we’ve all read about the random vibrations GM has no fix for. We still have 17’s with it.
    7. Lack of a turbo V6 for those who prefer low rpm torque or tow through the mountains (turbo’s maintain power a lot better at elevations)
    8. Poorly executed features like the wireless charging which seldom works properly. A phone has to be exactly on the pad and if you turn a corner too fast and it moves a half inch, it cuts out. It should be a vertical slot like the Malibu has.
    9. Rear seat headrests are for kids only as they only lift 2 inches. They actually cause more injuries to adults since it only covers the neck and not the head (more whiplash).
    10. Under rail box LED lights that you must unlock your door, open it, reach inside to the center console to turn them on instead of having a box mounted on/off like Ford.
    11. Lack of push button start, surround camera, trailer tow camera system (must be aftermarket installed by dealer), airbag suspension options for those who tow or haul payload regularly.
    12. Styling – The GMC looks nice. But the Chevy is nothing special. The ’14-15’s were plain and square with no appeal. The 16-18’s are better but those hood scoop/detents just don’t look right. Plus if the truck isn’t perfectly level, they actually hold water.
    13. The wheel wells – I get that GM has always had square-shaped wheel wells, but this generation has just squared them off way too much. The previous gen had about the right shape which weren’t perfectly square (rounded corners) but weren’t round like the others. Even GM fanboys are saying they prefer the previous gen fender wells.

Let’s not talk about the lack of quality control and testing as all the recalls this generation of truck has had speak for themselves.

Yes, there are some very nice things about this generation truck but the nice things are simple things like the rear corner bumper steps, rear fender well liners that deaden sound, HID/LED headlamps, lower step in height than Ford, etc. GM missed a lot of the “touches” that buyers paying big bucks want and deserve without paying even more.

    2. And not to mention no 6.2 in the regular cab version. There’s a High Desert Silverado that you would think it to be a Raptor fighter, instead it’s basically an Avalanche..real head scratcher. I own a 15′ High Country. It’s very nice & handsome, however after riding in & driving my brother’s 15′ Platinum F-150 I concluded GM dropped the ball in so many areas. It’s as if as they’re just content in sticking with “tried & true”. Same old GM. I don’t see how anyone could vote against you. Everything you’ve listed is on the money.

      1. Agree! I drive (Company Truck) the 2014 Silverado LTZ 4×4 Crew Cab and after driving the F-150 also would not spend my own money on the current GM Truck offerings. GM simply cut many corners here…on $50k vehicles with very significant profit margins per unit.

    1. My guess is one year from now. If sales continue to fall they might move it up a month or two. Not an ecoboost fan as I tow snowmobiles and a dune buggy. Got rid of my 14 Ford that sucked the gas as soon as you put anything behind it. My buddies Ram has 33k on it has been through a trans and front ball joints. The Silverado has had a number of recalls but still an overall better truck just feel like I’m settling after I spent $48,000

  5. Id personally rather see them carry the upcoming 4.2 tt from Cadillac instead of a v6 to differentiate from ecoboost better sound with better performance potential. Along with10 speed plus eAssist. Phase out 5.3 liter 6.2 should be mid level v8 and available in all body configurations and trims.

  6. Escala Sedan Looks Great! Hope it also has a large trunk like 23.3 cubic feet. Any Full sized Luxury Sport Coupes in the works? The best car I ever owned was a used 2003 Chevy Montecarlo SS. Wide Stance Ride, Interior Room, Seats, Dash, Instrument designs and English words marking controls and indicators, more physical buttons and less menu driven controls (enables driver focus on the road) Longer Trunk lids enabling to FIT larger items in the trunk. 2003Chavy Montecarlo SS Great great chevy !!
