The GM Authority Take
The decline in cumulative U.S. Colorado sales volume is surprising given the more or less runaway sales performance since the launch of the second-generation Colorado in 2015. As such, we attribute the decline to Chevrolet Silverado sales cutting into Colorado deliveries, as incentives on the full-size Chevy Silverado family were very lucrative in March, but very limited on the Colorado. We believe that the same circumstance also negatively impacted sales of the Colorado’s brother — the GMC Canyon.

I am very interested in purchasing a 2017 Chevrolet Colorado Crew cab in Orange Burst Metallic. Everything I am reading says it will be available mid-year. When exactly is mid-year availability? I am beyond anxious and can’t wait to place my order. Please let me know asap what date this color will be available. Thank you in advance for any information you can give.
I think your assumption about silverado/sierra cutting into colorado/canyon sales may be true. A double cab 4×4 sierra elevation trim with the 5.3L engine could be had for around $29,500 with rebates and incentives. A canyon crew cab 4×4 of similar trim package with rebates and incentives was around $31,000.
Looking for a compact size pickup but they are no longer avaliable in the Noth American market place. The GMC salesguy say he would “live” to own one too! Compact size is from 190″-200″ long!
Looking for a truck about as long as the Colorado… a bit wider and quite a bit lower.. Why so far off the ground? Just raises the center of gravity .. less safe… If you are not going off road you don’t need it that high off the ground… This is crazy..
Well here are some observations here based on shopping for a new mid sized truck over more than a year.
The keys here are this.
Yes to some degree the rebates do affect the sales of the mid size but not to a large degree. Most people in this segment buy because they want the smaller size not the larger truck even at a larger discount. But with that said the 10K off or more on many models will lure some people over to the larger truck.
Second the trucks have had little incentives and only recently gotten some help. But here is the problem selection of models on the lot that can take advantage of the rebates is limited.
In this segment the best selling trucks are 4×4 crew cab short beds with a V6 most of these in SLT, SLE and LT or Z71 do not last long on the lot. Most I find sell in 3 weeks or less unless they are some odd combo.
While some dealers may have larger selections in some parts in other areas I have found no trucks to 1-4 at best. Often many will be extended cab or long bed crews that do not sell fast. Or even the new Diesel that while popular is priced $3700 more over the V6 Engine.
Also many of the people buying these trucks are not traditional Truck buyers. Many are SUV owners wanting the open bed. I am amazed how many are moving to these trucks and that is why the Crew short bed is so popular.
The numbers really are not that down and are still up for the year. With supplies limited in many areas I expect it to remain slow till the 2018 models arrive.
As for full size prices yes you can get some decent trucks like the Elevation models. But not at $29K unless they are pretty basic. Laura GMC one of the cheapest dealers are selling hail damged models for $32K about $7900 off.
I priced a SLT Sierra Ext Cab for myself that was $53.000 and loaded with heated wheel and vented seats on 22 inch wheels. I could have gotten it for around $41500. Great price but I do not need or want a truck that size.
I Chose a Canyon Denali once I got them down on price and am happy with my choice. It has all the options and I got it for about the same price as a loaded SLT model. That is pretty good as I had done a search and only could find 37 in the color I wanted. Mine at the local dealer was the best price in about 800 miles. Too.
The plant in Wentzville is running full and GM is trying to move the box van production to Ohio to free up more line space as they are built on the same line. This should help supplies moving into the 2018 year.
The bottom line is this is not anything to worry about right not. GM also has a head start but they need to be ready to move on these trucks once the new full size is out as they will see more competition from Honda and Ford. The Honda will really attract the SUV buyers as it is more car like than truck like. But with that said the truck buyers will still prefer the GM and Ford entries.
I love my truck as it has power, a good ride and is so quiet for anything not just a truck. MPG is good for the size and weight.
As for the height I am suspecting the 2 wheel drive is the same height due to sales. Most people in this class are into sitting higher up. And no the roll over is not an issue as you can see by the government testing. It is not any worse than any other SUV or truck.
It would be nice if GM could take say the Terrain and make it into a smaller SUV based truck to provide an even smaller entry. I think there is money to make there and development would not be as much based on a present model.
This is what I have found and with the high sales of Jan and Feb I was not surprised by limited availability when I went to shop. If it had not been for the right truck and the right price I would still be looking.
The prices I quoted are from Laura Buick/GMC. You can, right now, buy a double cab 4×4 elevation for $30,296 all blacked out. The $29 is what they they were selling 2016 models for earlier in the year.
Then you left out the hail damage.
You do know they had a major hail storm that has led to repaired vehicles with added discounts on top of their already lower prices than most dealers ever see.
In other words they are not the norm.
Then you should fully disclose that these prices were for unsold used trucks.
The prices of what most people look for are a little higher but still a good deal if you want a full size.
A Brazilian designed POS!
Well you have a problem here.
The truck shares little with the global model. It was near complete redesign with a different frame, different or modified engine including the deisel. It also has a different bed and interior.
The truth is it only shares some basic engineering with the global.
