2018 Chevrolet Camaro Loses Krypton Green Color, Gains Base 1LS Trim Level, 1LE Package On 2SS Trim & More

We now know that the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro will bring six changes compared to the 2017 model, thanks to order guides sent in by our dealer friends.

On the outside, the 2018 Camaro (sadly) loses the Krypton Green exterior color and Camaro 50th Anniversary Edition package.

New features include the addition of the (menacing) ZL1 1LE Extreme Track Performance Package as well as a new base 1LS trim level that slots underneath the 1LT. The addition of the LS trim will likely decrease the base price of the sixth-gen Camaro.

What’s more, the SS 1LE Track Performance Package and 1LE Hash Mark Decal will become available on the 2SS Coupe late in the model year. Previously, the SS 1LE package was only available on the 1SS Coupe trim level.

And that does it for the 2018 Camaro changes, updates and new features. Thoughts? Sound off in the comments.

Following is the official RPO-level change list.

The updates and changes described here are specific to the U.S. market and may be different for other markets.

For the U.S. and Canadian markets, the 2018 Chevy Camaro is assembled by GM U.S.A. at the GM Lansing Grand River plant in Lansing, Michigan, USA.

  1. If the ugly green color didn’t work in 2010 what made GM think it would work a few years later? 😛 *preps for all the thumbs down*

    1. Troll bate taken.

Synergy Green (as it was called on the fifth-gen) worked and worked well. Those models are sought after all over.

It’s meant to be a limited-run hue then and now.

      1. Interesting. Recently a Synergy Green Camaro went into my friends body shop ( EX wife keyed every panel ) all the guys agreed that the color was ugly at first but they said it grew on them. I’m still on the fence lol.

    1. If all you want is a quarter mile track star in a pony car body, then try the COPO Camaro for your answer. Faster in the quarter with less HP and is legal to drive on NHRA sanctioned tracks. Demon not legal on NHRA tracks. COPO not legal for the streets unfortunately, but If your not using the Demon for the track bragging rights then what good is it. You’ll never be able to use it safely and to its fullest potential on the street anyway. If you want all around goodness without the singular machismo claim of 840HP to then go with the Camaro ZL1-1LE for all sorts of track fun whether straight line or on the curves. There is no Dodge vehicle that can touch it. That single seat and all that horsepower in the Demon might get you down the road in a straight line quicker, but the Camaro can do it nearly as well and also pick up the ladies along the way!

    2. The Challenger SRT Demon is really an answer to a question very, very few are asking. That’s why so few will be built. So really, there is no answer from GM that’s needed.

  4. That’s it GM? That’s all you’ve got to stimulate sales for a slow selling line that can do much better, deserves so much more?

    Boring. ?

    1. On cue GM fans give me a thumbs down.

So I’ll ask those people a couple of questions:

Do you deny Camaro sales are slow? We know Camaro inventories are among the most bloated at GM. 2nd only to Corvette? GM Authority just announced it looks like the Camaro plant will see a 10 week extended shutdown. And, yes, I realize part of this is an industry slowdown in passenger cars. But I defy you to claim that’s all to the story.

Camaro loses a paint color and obviously the 50th Anniversary styling. Neither impressed me but the real issue isn’t my personal taste but why isn’t there some creative replacements? Please don’t argue less is exciting.

The 1LE stuff gets the attention of enthusiast websites and magazines but are a blip in sales.

I’ll concede adding a slightly cheaper base trim may stimulate some sales but I dare anyone to claim it’s exciting.

Based on the poor sales of the Camaro do you think this is enough of a change in GM’s pricing strategy to excite buyers?

I await any argument the 2018 Camaro changes aren’t boring and disappointing.

While I love the performance aspects of the Camaro, Chevy’s marketing of the car including interesting aesthetics disappoints me greatly. It takes talent to make such a fundamentally interesting car a bit dull to look at on the lot.

    2. As we have discussed before, the only thing that’s holding back gen six Camaro sales volumes is the much-higher price over the fifth-generation model. Specifically, the fact that the gen six SS is roughly $5,000-$7,000 more expensive than the gen 5, and also more expensive than a Mustang GT (in base on Premium trim). Yet the gen six also drives that much better than both of those, too.

So that’s it: that’s the problem — price. It’s not a lack of “excitement”. It’s not a problem with product. It’s simple supply and demand microeconomics that has the sales lower year-over-year. But is this a negative? It doesn’t appear to be.

Given that Chevy isn’t lowering the price on these, it would appear that they are content with having the lower sales volume and higher profits, while also being regarded as the best car in the class.

Now, the base 1LS trim being introduced for the 2018 MY will probably help get some conscious customers in the door and raise that cumulative sales volume some.

But let’s not make the mistake of thinking there is something wrong with gen six Camaro sales just based on sales volume figures along. For all we know, it has always been part of the strategy.

PS: Ford and Dodge have been dumping excess Mustang and Challenger inventory on rental fleets so as not to slow things down at their factories. GM has not been doing that with the Camaro. Instead, it’s taking the responsible (and more profitable) approach of halting a factory for a bit.

      1. A couple of comments, Alex.

We agree the Camaro is overpriced.

Pricing strategies get back to my old Econ 101 days. The old price elasticity of demand. I’m not a GM insider crunching the numbers but it’s hard for me to believe the price of Camaros are inelastic, to speak nerd. Ford and Chrysler certainly aren’t coming to the same conclusion. Almost no goods near MSRP are inelastic.

To speak more economic nerd, shutting down factories even if there’s no fixed cost to cover (hard to believe) is a big lost opportunity cost.

Then there’s marketing. The best marketing for a car is to see some on the streets. I see very few 6-gen Camaros out in the wild. I can count them on 1 hand with digits left over. This type of advertising is better than free. People pay many thousands of dollars to help GM advertise!

Aesthetics is a personal thing but subjectively GM is losing the Anniversary Edition package. The only package I know GM has to dress up Camaros is the Redline. Neither I’m overly fond of color-wise but that’s not the point. Add at least 1 to replace the Anniversary Edition.

Then there’s simple aethetic stuff. For example, other than the Anniversary Edition, you can’t get painted calipers on on all 4 wheels. To get them on 2 for the SS it’s like 3 grand because it’s a brake upgrade. Seriously? Sure, you can go aftermarket but that’s lost profits to GM. It also gets back to marketing. Sharp looking cars sell better than the plain old what color paint do you want (interiors of every Camaro within 150 miles of me is black – another topic) marketing strategy GM currently is following with the Camaro.

      2. Reg; “(Price)the only thing that’s holding back gen six Camaro sales volumes” _ Which is really unfounded when you consider the content compared to the Mustang.

My local Chevy general manager and the internet sales guy both say, that one of the big reasons for slow sales is the popularity of the Gen-5 and the large sales volume of the last couple of years of that generation. Most Gen-5 owners, are quite happy with their Camaro’s and some have only had their cars a couple of years now and aren’t ready to trade up.

Used Gen-5 Camaro resale prices are holding up quite well and don’t sit on the lots very long.

  5. Actually, of the 3 main muscle cars that are being produced now, the Mustang design has probably the prettiest overall design and the Challenger is the ugliest; in fact, it’s downright boxy and boring to look at. I wish GM would decide on what the ominous lower grille and ducting should look like when paired to the current fit-and-trim upper grille, which, in my opinion, is really beautiful. However, the rest of the car is way too retro and doesn’t match what you see in front at all. The side windows, especially the rear ones are boring and ugly, and the rear of the car, with its boxy tail lights also needs some redesign work. Making it look like an old Camaro in the back and something new in front doesn’t work for me at all. I wouldn’t buy one.

    1. I actually liked it,I admit it took awhile, but it grew on me.Now if GM could come up with at least 2 more colors that are Vibrant like a Orange, and not Burnt Orange,or dark Copper.A different Blue,The Artic blue is just too “light”,make it a few shades darker.I can honestly say i have yet to see a Camaro in Artic Blue…just sayin. Also why not the Tri-coat White Pearl paint.expecially for the 2LT and 2SS models.

    2. Mustang the Prettiest”???You gotta be kidding me.When i first seen the new Design of the Mustang,I thought to myself, man is that thing “UGLY”!!!Looks more like a European Mustang than a American Mustang. At least the Camaro has American styling which is much improved over the 5th-Gen.IMHO Ford ruined the Mustang.I used to have a 2012 GT,and that was American styling, and it looked great. The Challenger, well Chrysler made the mistake of designing that car on the Chrysler 300 frame, which was way to big.Untill Chrysler re-designs(start from scratch)the Challenger and down sizes it,it will never be an option for me.Besides Chrysler has had the standard 5.7 Liter Hemi in the R/T for over 10 years now with the same 375 HP Hemi, basically the Dodge ram truck motor.

  6. Glad the 1LE is going to be offered on the 2SS. I’m just hoping the Z/28 wont be as gaudy as the 1LE/ZL1 and that it will be more along the lines of the regular SS just a little more aggressive. Like taking the ZL1 side skirts, and rear fascia, adding a taller rear lp spoiler with a gurney flap, a cowl induction (heat extracting hood, a 7.0L LT-small block, 10-speed auto, E-diff, etc With a bigger front lip, highg flow grille, slihgtly wider body work, and a fully comfortable and option-ready interior.

  7. I put in a factory order for a 2017 Camaro ZL1 Thanksgiving 2016 through my local Chevy dealer. I was told it would take approximately 16 weeks for delivery. Well March 2017 came with bad news. Dealership called, they got word my car was not going to be built! Why Chevy wanted to lose a $60K+ sale is beyond me. Any ideas out there?

  8. What are they talking about with the 1LS. That was already offered for 2017. It was the 2016 that had the LT version as base. I seriously doubt GM will get a clue and drop the base price any.

    1. Article is confused on the ‘1LS’ trim. It was offered for 2017.

  9. Way to mess it up GM. Krypton Green gone and unable to get the ZL1 1LE with that awesome 10 speed auto. What a mess. Reconsider your decision.

  10. Here’s an idea cut the LT/ LS and market only a V6 RS and V8 SS…both available with the 1LE pack! Further, find a way to “fix” the roofline, which I suspect is also a culprit in the slow sales theory.

    1. I would like to see the 1le pkg on the Turbo-4, there by benefiting from the lower weight with that excellent track package. That’s a combo like my old Mustang SVO and would further set the Ecoboost Mustang, with the Performance Pack, farther behind on the track. But that depends on what Ford has upgraded on the 2018 Mustang, but, I can’t imagine that Ford will have the answer for the very competent Camaro which is almost true sports car if you ignore the back seats(easy to do) which make the Mustang and Camaro both GT’s/Gran Turismo’s

The Camaro really doesn’t need the 1LE pkg to compete against the Performance Pack equipped EcoBoost Mustang on the track, but the extra cooling and bigger brakes would be needed for track work.

  13. Just picked up a new 2018 1SS 1LE mystic blue. This could be the best kept secret in your lineup. Please tell the engineering team who put this package together and the decision makers at GM / Chevrolet a HUGE HUGE double hug kind of THANK YOU !!! All these replies about Camaro’s being too expensive are out of their friggin minds. The quality of this car and the performance level delivered off the showroom floor is by far hands down the best performance coupe / sports car deal in the USA. Great idea making it available in 2SS package. You really need to make a commercial that features this car in a big way…funny thing is the Chevy salesman wasn’t even familiar with the details of the car. So additional training to the sales force is in hand as well. But again…thank you for making a car at a price point that literally smokes the competition.

  15. I ordered a 2010 Camaro in yellow only from seeing bumble bee also wanting a color that would be bold and stick out ! Later I traded my 2010 for a 2013 ZL1 which I swore I wouldn’t do because all Camaro colors *suck* in the same yellow hummmmm !
    I have a fresh idea !
I would gladly pay 5000 extra to be able to choose whatever color I wanted !
If the ZL1 is limited in production and the Canada plant is shutting down they can fire up the paint booth and let us pick some really cool colors !!!
I have been a Chevrolet fan my whole life 52 I love the new Camaro just hate hate hate the few boring colors that Chevy offer !
