Opel Prepares To Celebrate Eight Decades Of Flagship Cars At Techno Classica

Opel is preparing for one flagship of a parade. Quite literally. The brand announced plans to celebrate eight decades of Opel flagship sedans at the 29th Techno Classica in Essen.

From 1937 t0 2017, Opel has consistently delivered on flagship sedans, beginning with the 1937 Admiral. The pre-WWII vehicle became the spearhead for the brand, leading to the 1956 Kapitän, 1968 Diplomat, 1970 Admiral, 1978 Senator and to today’s Insignia Grand Sport.

The Kapitän on display carries even greater significance with it, too. It not only signified a milestone in Opel vehicles, but the particular model heading to Techno Classic is the two-millionth Opel ever produced. With a gold painted roof and 24-carat gold plated decorative elements, it pushed Opel to become the first European automaker to surpass the two million mark.

Opel will invade the event with its classic sheet metal and modern Insignia Grand Sport when the event opens on April 5.

    Are you sure?

The Kapitan in the photograph is stated to be a 1956 model. The 2 millionth Austin was produced in 1953 and almost certainly at some point in the 1940s if licensed Austin production is considered e.g. BMW, Nissan, Rosengart, American Austin etc. Indeed, it’s not inconceivable either that another European manufacturer may have beaten Austin to the 2 million mark.
