Mustang Boss 302 driver Andrew Aquilante took two wins in this weekend’s Pirelli World Challenge double header in St. Petersburg, beating Chevrolet’s Lawson Aschenbach to the finish both times.
Aschenbach had put the all-new Camaro GT4.R on pole Race 1, but lost the lead to the Phoenix Performance Boss 302 early in the lead and never regained the top spot. He crossed the finish line second, just ahead of Racer’s Edge’s Jade Buford in his Sin R1 GT4.
In Race 2, Aquilante made a bad start and let Aschenbach take the early lead, but the Mustang had worked its way past the Camaro four laps later and survived two restarts to take the win. Aschenbach again took second, with Performance Motorsport Group’s Parker Chase rounding out the podium in his Ginetta G55.
The World Challenge Series will follow IndyCar west to Long Beach the weekend of April 7th for the second event of the 2017 season. Click here for full results from St. Pete Round 1 and here for full results from St. Pete Round 2.

Was there for the first race this weekend. The Camaro represented well for a debute outing, but truth be told, the Boss walked away and maintained a easy lead for the rest of the race.
For such an old chassis, the Boss was really dialed in. That thing ran like a freight train! The Camaro was never realisticly in a position to regain the lead once the Boss got in front. The mustang appeared to have the power, handling, and driver skill to stay ahead of the field with ease.
At least the Camaro got second. Maybe the track favored the Boss, or maybe the Camaro isn’t sorted out. Either way, a Boss 302 wore down and ultimately beat a Z/28 last year as well. Except in that instance it was obvious the old Camaro was suffering from a weight disadvantage that did it in with overheated brakes, and worn tires in the end. After nearly a full race of the Mustange nipping at its rear bumper, the Z/28 finnallly succumbed to the pressure and ran wide in the 1st turn after the front straight, under braking, and it was all she wrote for the last couple of laps..great race! We were literally screaming and chearing as they battled it out.
Ford has Midas touch right now, GM is bs ING their way. There maybe hope by 2019 or so with updàted equipment. I am loyal GM retiree and it is unsettling to see sales sagging in Camaro and Cadillac saloon cars. Camaros aren’t going to sell any better with second place finishes.
I see the Camaro as superior to mustang in most arenas but ppl continue to opt for Ford.
I suppose we will have to bite the bullet and bide our time. The GM bailout has hurt sales believe me I have heard ppl with grudges over the bailout and vowing to boycott the badge. Yes grumble all you want but you know whom you are.
To survive if you are a GM partisan lower expectations or suffer greatly.
