The GM Authority Take

We posit that the increase in February Savana deliveries in the U.S. and Canada is the direct result of increased availability of the van family thanks to GM’s partnership with Navistar.

To note, the GM Wentzville plant is continuing to assemble the Savana (and its twin, the Chevy Express), while Navistar is assembling cutaway versions of the Savana (and Express) at its plant in Ohio. The arrangement enables GM to increase production capacity of the vans, thereby boosting supply and availability levels. And with the Savana posting a 30-some-percent growth in deliveries, it would appear that there is enough market demand to soak up the increased supply.

  1. The sooner they move production the better as it is holding up Colorado and Canyon production.

You may want to note the mid size trucks are build on the same line as the vans. They are on three shifts and supplies have been very tight on the crew short beds as they sell fast and have seen little in incentives.

The plant is running extended 3 shifts now and just can’t make enough. With the Ford coming they need to move fast to retain the customers who can not get a truck now when the Ford arrives.

    1. To clarify: production is not being “moved”.

What is happening instead is Navistar is now making cutaways Express/Savana vans, while production at Wentzville is continuing as it was prior to the Navistar tie-up.

      1. Cut always were also part of the Wentzville line and was a major part the van production there for fleets.

Look at the line photos and most ha a U Haul box cut away in the background.

So you are correct the shift here will free up moreline space for more mid size trucks that are selling so well.

While shopping I found most crew short beds lasted 1-2 weeks at most dealers.

No matter what more trucks built more sold.
