The GM Authority Take

Given the market’s general shift towards crossover utility vehicles from other vehicle types like sedans and coupes, the increase in Chevy Spark deliveries in February (as well as in January) is quite surprising. Two potential reasons for the increase could be:

  1. Fleet sales: though unconfirmed, the Spark could be a significant part of Chevy’s 5 percent (1,991 unit) increase in February fleet deliveries
  2. Competitive advantage: the Spark is the only modern (and therefore competitive) vehicle in its size and price class in the U.S. and Canada. Its utilitarian hatchback form factor bears some resemblance to a crossover, which could be a selling point for customers interested in a crossover, but turned off by the higher overall price of a Chevrolet Trax or Equinox

2017 Chevy Spark Activ

The Spark received several updates and changes for the 2017 model year, one of which is the addition of the Spark Activ equipment group that gives the city car a slightly more rugged, crossover-like appearance along with a somewhat higher ride height. Hence, we believe that the addition of the Spark Activ trim level will increase interest in the Spark, thereby translating to even higher sales in the near future. The Chevrolet Spark Activ is set to launch in the first quarter of 2017.
