The GM Authority Take

Now in its eighth year on the market, the Chevy Equinox takes the crown for the oldest vehicle in its segment. So if nothing else, its impressive February sales performance provides even more evidence that consumers are in love with crossovers at the expense of other vehicle types such as sedans.

Even better, Chevrolet is now in the process of launching a completely overhauled 2018 Chevy Equinox in the U.S. The vehicle features an all-new engine lineup and rides on an all-new architecture (GM’s D2 platform) that enables it to shed over 400 pounds in weight, contributing to improved fuel economy and handling. What’s more, the 2018 Equinox gets an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the current model.

Ultimately, we expect that the new Equinox will sell in even higher volumes than the model it replaces, so long as GM can keep up with demand.

  1. The new ‘Nox is not impressive in my book. It’s smaller, more expensive and full of cheapness inside, especially on “LT” and lower trim levels. The current one has been very steady, “new” and lighter weight is not always better.

  2. LFX have you driven one? Are you basing that on pictures? Interior room is very comparable to the old style. Outside it’s more streamlined and yes, slightly smaller. I believe 4″. Something most men wouldn’t notice. Fuel prices are climbing again, people wages are shrinking or stagnating. Given the increased new technology and engineering included in the new model, the slight price increase is minimal. Given inflation, could be perceived as a price decrease. Lots of bang for the buck$ in my opinion. I love it and love the old style as well. Everyone that has driven one, loves it. Hopefully you’ll find a vehicle that makes you happy.

    1. My wife is on her 2nd Equinox, lease is up soon, so here comes the new one, just in time, right? Not so much. It’s smaller, which gave the current one a clear advantage. One of our favorite features, the adjustable back seat, is gone. Also, as mentioned above, when you see the new one in person in L,LS or “LT” trim you will see what I mean, it does’nt have an upscale look or feel. Cheap looking cloth seats, hard plastic everywhere. No need to drive one, when you know you will not be buying one! Another very safe, very calculated bean counter effort by GM. Pass all the way.

      1. The old one was worse than the new one, I feel the older one looked the cheapest in class and I’ve driven one it was horrible. And the old one had cheep looking plastic everywhere so I don’t know what you were talking about.

        1. Here is my viewpoint, the current ‘Nox was not a superior driving vehicle, did it have some cheapness inside? Oh yes! But, it was roomier than others, had a fairly smooth ride and…………was a good value! The new one (in my opinion) has not advanced the nameplate. The cheapness is still there (don’t be fooled by the pics of just the “Premier” trim level), the size is smaller and………….the value is gone. The ’18 Nox is now just as pricey as any in the segment if not more so, but without the size advantage.

  3. They’re building 2017’s until July this year along side the 2018’s. Most of those are slated for fleet sales. IF you want to update what you have, get to your dealer ASAP and have them order a 2017 version for you. Right now, they still can. That could tide you over till someone makes exactly what you want. Good luck with what ever you choose.

  4. I have a 2009 Chevy Equinox, and I will keep it until GM produces a hybrid or EREV version. Since the Gen 3 Equinox is based in the same D2XX platform as the Gen 2 Volt, I see the EREV Equinox coming soon.
