The GM Authority Take
Camaro sales fell the most in its segment in February, as Ford Mustang sales dipped 17 percent and Dodge Challenger sales increased 19 percent. However, it’s worth noting that Dodge has been offering the Challenger at some steep discounts in the range of 15-20 percent cash back, while Ford is offering $2,000 cash back on the 2017 Mustang.

CHALLENGER | +18.77% | 6,107 | 5,142 | -12.06% | 9,500 | 10,803 |
For its part, Chevy began offering a $2,500 cash back incentive on the 2017 Camaro for current Chevrolet owners and lessees for March, which speaks to the brand’s focus on retaining customers.
Ultimately, we attribute the February decline in Camaro sales on the higher price point and lower incentives of the sixth-generation model when compared to its primary rivals, as well as a continued decrease in sales to daily rental fleets, moves that are strategic for GM in North America.

Even as a huge fan of this car as it is currently designed and engineered, I think it is time to change some things up. There are too many stigmas (we all know what they are) surrounding the Camaro since Gen5 that no matter how great the car is, it just can’t shake them off. People are finding the compromises just aren’t worth Chevy’s price of admission. Fortunately but unfortunately this should spark some great deals to be had.
I agree but its too late now, may be on the seventh gen they will listen to the concerns of customers, that chose their competitors over them. Their refusal to address the the number one complaint about the fifth gen, has come back to bite them. I just hope that they can use the awesome drivetrain, and chassis for the replacement of the SS sedan. It’s a crying shame that the unbelievable work of the engineers, are being negated by the horrible job of the designers. Chevy should fire every exterior and interior designer that worked on the car, and don’t let them anywhere near the SS sedan replacement. Their horrible work has cast a bad shadow on this car from its introduction. Let whoever designed the exterior and interior of the current impala take the reins with the new SS sedan.
How many times are you going to say Chevy SS sedan? There most likely won’t be a replacement, have you seen the sales numbers of the current version? Got any data to back up the upcoming SS sedan?
The designers aren’t the problem. The interior is good, the exterior design looks awesome (more so than any competitors) but at the expense vision (which they slightly improved). They can go another direction but they played it safe after the sales and positive design of the 5th gen with this one. I bet the next one looks quite difference.
Between sluggish car (and sports car) sales and the higher prices less people will buy as this moves up market. Personally I really liked the car but it was a little small for me. Plus making modifications I would rather start with an older and cheaper platform than a brand new one.
I’ve written this once here before. But it seems worth repeating.
Dealers are reluctant to allow test drives in the winter. Too many pony car buyers around me have a weekend toy and don’t daily drive them. Those cars aren’t getting worn down. If that is widespread and doesn’t change, the previous sales were unsustainable.
If their solution to sales is to drastically change the styling, it’s a mistake. The car needs to become more comfortable (in a general sense) to use.
The Camaro is not small, but it feels the same size inside as a BRZ with 3 inches of headroom thrown away. I’m guessing more visibility blame comes from tall people forced to sit leaned back. It’s not too late. Changing the seats can fix a big part of this.
I love how so many complain of the 6th gen Camaro’s apparent sightline and “styling” issues yet except for the Mustang, the Camaro still easily outsells all other sports coupes. As usual, it just reminds me, 90% of commentors don’t know what they’re talking about.
I will say, it is damn impressive Chrysler Is still managing to sell the fat assed, completely uncompetative Challenger in ever more numbers. That thing is damn near 10 years old and was outdated when it came to market in 2008. I guess it’s true a lotta hp, and some graphics, can make a pig pretty.
jz, you totally nailed it about the Challenger.
The car is ridiculously big.
Great power and handling but can’t see out of it. Too late to raise the roof a few inches I guess.
Coupe & Sedan sales are both down.
The Camaro gives you a lot of car for the money, so the price of the SS kinda scares some consumers away….until they realize the price of the SS is worth it.
The 6th Gen Camaro will be fine. GM sold around 75,000 units in 2016.
It’s the new era…where the CUV is law of the land.
Looks and price.
That’s why the car isn’t selling.
Should have looked more like a 5th gen.
Lotsa goofy styling elements on the 6th gen. Plus lack of crispness. Too soft. Too generic looking. Too foreign looking.
Loser design.
All that and a $50K price tag doomed the car.
Less sales make my 2016 rs convertible more rare lol. But seriously it’s a great car far better quality and performance than the other too. Maybe the refresh will put a 70 1/2 front end on it and sales each up lol
