The GM Authority Take

The (front-drive-based) midsize luxury crossover segment saw a decline in sales volume during the prior month of January. However, the segment appears to be back on track in February, and the XT5 is well-positioned to reaps the benefits of current market trends that favor crossovers over sedans.

  1. It’s the number 2 mid lux crossover behind the Lexus RX. I think it could use a V-Sport model using the powertrain from the XTS V-Sport.

    1. Well, ok. #2 behind the RX. Great. Good. Wonderful.

But why is no one talking about how GM has completely shut itself out of the sport midsize segment (X5, GLE, F-Pace)? Though those sell in lower volumes, they carry much higher ATPs.

With the strategy to put all Cadillac crossovers on front drive GM platforms, GM will not compete in that space… and it is quite sad

  2. Sadly the number of incremental sales from a performance version of a FWD based SUV would be miniscule.

Performance versions are nice, but don’t pay the bills. That heavy work needs to be done by the normal lines that sell in quantities.

    1. I don’t disagree. But the bandwidth for the lux crossover class is very wide. An XT5 V-Sport would handily outsell the XTS V-Sport. Most buyers don’t care if FWD based or not as long as they can tick the box for AWD.

    2. “Performance versions are nice, but don’t pay the bills. That heavy work needs to be done by the normal lines that sell in quantities.”

      Completely incorrect.

There is no “heavy work” involved in bringing a performance variant to market. The dev work is actually quite minimal. It is even more minimal in the case for GM, which already has the engines, suspension, and drivetrain components scattered across other vehicle lines for a performance variant of the XT5. What is needed is integration and validation work… which is not expensive or heavy in any way.

Furthermore, performance variants are EXTREMELY profitable. They often garner 2x-2.5x the margin of non-performance models.

This is why you see every German model with a performance variant: they are cash cows. The volume doesn’t matter on them… since scale is derived from within the group (powertrain dev) and within the model line (assembly). The benefits far outweigh the costs.

The fact that there isn’t a performance variant of the XT5 is representative of just how amiss GM/Cadillac product planning was 2-4 years ago as it relates to crossovers.

  3. There will be alpha chassis, and omega chassis crossover’s Cadillac’s, going forward. All Cadillac crossover’s will not be on E2xx chassis, these next generation XT5 wouldn’t be.

    1. As much as I want this to be true, I do not know that it actually is.

There have not been any reports to indicate this from Cadillac management, and the Alpha platforms are not capable of running a crossover. So maybe Alpha 2 or Alpha 3… but definitely not the current iteration of Alpha.
