The GM Authority Take
Given that the launch of the all-new 2017 LaCrosse is now complete, we can only attribute the decrease in LaCrosse deliveries to the ongoing shift in the consumer behavior dynamics as the primary reason for the model’s sales decline in both January and February. Specifically, consumers are continuing to favor crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) at the expense of sedans such as the LaCrosse.
Whether this trend is permanent or temporary is anyone’s guess at this point, but depressed LaCrosse sales will likely continue well into the future as long as crossovers remain in vogue.

It’s a shame because by all accounts the LaCrosse is a very competitive product. I think GM’s mistake was trying to push it further upmarket in the face of increasing sales pressure by SUVs/CUVs.
I guess its time for some generous incentives! Its not going to sell any better on its own merits by the looks of things. I think you are correct, Steve, in your assessment.
Thanks John. It’s worth noting I think that when GM kicked up the incentives on the Gen6 Camaro in the late fall, those sales picked up. I know Buick doesn’t want to do this, but I’m not sure I see another way for them to clear out this inventory.
Like I said in an earlier posting regarding this situation, if it was rear wheel drive with all wheel drive optional and maybe the availability of a higher output engine, sales numbers would look better.
Sedans are a dying breed The Lacrosse is a handsome well built sedan. However it is overpriced and GM continues to put incentives on poorly managed dealers that keep 2016 MY vehicles around waiting for gold to fall from heaven. GM has barely put incentives on it and jammed a bunch of them down dealers throats. The Envision is too far behind?
Considering how GM exited Europe due to losses, could Buick in the US be far behind?
Probably on the sedan side. However the Encore continues to be a Buick home run. However if they don’t make the Envision more attractive and with the amount of dealer inventory on hand I don’t think most dealers will order another 2017? All new Enclave reveal early next month…let’s hope they don’t put the Lacrosse shifter in it!
Mary Barra is far too reactionary not taking the long view. Opel sale is an example. Jumping into ride sharing while Uber losses two billion is another.
Analysts are often wrong on predictions. Mary needs to stop over reacting to Wall Street demands. Making Opel profitable using US accounting rules isn’t impossible, would have required more SUVs, which are in the pipeline, and the transfer of one Opel factory to GM for Chevrolet global production.
AWD a $12k option?!!! Really! And just 5 boring colors three of which are extra cost options? Seriously? No sun roof option? With very limited options and colors this car should start $3k less.
Yes, that is what is impeding new LaCrosse most – very poor trim & pricing structure.
It’s not that the AWD is a 12K option – more precisely, it’s only available on higher trims.
And lower trims tend to have less features than, say, Kia Optima or Hyundai Sonata, which are mid-size lower class cars, according to common sense.
I don’t expect GM to fix this – GM either has ridiculous inertia in understanding these things, or they are deliberately shooting themselves in the feet these days. So, as a second gen 2010 LaCrosse owner, I expect myself to get maybe Cadenza or something Korean in the future – simply because these guys do care about trim & pricing, and GM clearly does not – at least regarding new 3rd gen LaCrosse.
More than that, if it goes this way in the next few years, 3rd gen LaCrosse may be the last generation of LaCrosse, with no 4th gen – at least, in North America (maybe it will only continue in China).
Actually, if you are going to get the Premium trim (which I would anyway), AWD is a $2200 option. Buick does need to offer AWD on some lower trim models (at least the Essence trim), and they need to do the same with head-up display, and a sunroof should be optional on ALL trims of a supposedly premium car. I’m not sure how they justify charging extra for colors other than the tri-coat paints, but that needs to stop asap.
I agree then add a ridiculous shift selector and a very annoying “start stop” feature that you cannot disable. Odd BMW WILL disable their “start stop” for the customer. Just a few of the reasons why I bought my 14 LaCrosse vs. leasing a 17……
it’s funny how HUD – a technology which I think could really help the LaCrosse’s cause here – and AWD are available only on the upmarket trims. I’m starting to think the Germans are really onto something with their mix-n-match “packages.”
Let’s face it folks, time for some management restructuring at GM, starting at the top. This is all going in the wrong direction, with different dynamics, but eerily similar to what happened in the late 2000’s. GM needs car people with experience back in control. People that have a better grasp of what their customers’ are really asking for in this complex, diverse market is what is lacking. The narrow minded, micro management approach of the last 10 years is not always the best way to go. Car buying, for many of us, is an emotional and sensory experience that has been disregarded and neglected by, not only GM, but other manufacturers as well.
I wouldn’t go that far. Generally GM’s vehicles have been winning awards and are more competitive than ever in their segment. The company itself has returned to profitability. The only real weakness that Mary Barra’s team has shown consistently is the lack of effective marketing across all brands. I think GMC has good marketing and that’s about it. I can’t remember the last time I saw a Buick commercial. And if somebody would like to tell me what in the hades Caddy is doing marketing-wise I’m all ears.
Honestly getting sick of the GM Authority take each month declaring “gee we can’t figure out why sales are down, must be due to the popularity of crossovers”
From GM Authority/GM Press release:
“Fleet sales decreased 81.4 percent or 2,840 units to 651 units, representing 4 percent of total Buick sales for the month. That compares to 3,491 fleet sales in February 2016, which represented 19.6 percent of total Buick sales.”

Maybe, just maybe, some or all of those 1300 Lacrosse sales came out of the 2840 vehicles that Buick sent to fleets last February?
Add that to the list of things this new one has against it IMO. price, decontenting, and styling that could have been better.
The current owners of LaCrosse will not like this car…
The shifter is awkward and weird….I am not used to it yet!
Also, the start-stop-jerk of the constant engine shut-off upon stopping is annoying….
I am not used to this either…
This is not nearly the car that my 2014 LaCrosse was….!
I have not yet completed my love affair with the 2010-2013 (I currently have the 2013). I drove the 2017 for a weekend while my car was being serviced, and I’m just not quite sold on it yet. The body style is just a little too retro for me….considering the fact that I also owned a 2002 Buick Park Avenue. Go figure
