Opel has officially begun production of the 2017 Insignia Grand Sport, and that means its export markets will soon be on deck. The all-new Insignia will not only become North America’s 2018 Buick Regal but the 2018 Holden Commodore, too. And Australia’s next Holden Sportwagon has been spied in the flesh.
Spy shots show the 2018 Commodore Sportwagon with zero camo covering the vehicle, save for some minimal stuff around the headlights and the badges. It looks identical to the renderings Holden provided of what the Commodore Sportwagon will look like when it reaches Australian shores in early 2018.
That’s not a terrible thing, though, since the vehicle is quite a looker. However, for some locals, the idea of an imported Commodore and Sportwagon variant still doesn’t sit well. If you’ve been out of the loop, Holden will cease local manufacturing of the VF Commodore Series II and its variants on October 20 of this year.
As for this new Commodore Sportwagon, this seems to be the Calais variant, meaning more premium touches are to be found inside. A 3.6-liter LGX V6 is said to serve as the Sportwagon’s powerplant of choice, likely paired to a torque vectoring all-wheel drive system. The 2018 Commodore Sportwagon will also tip the scales 441 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, thanks to a switch from the hefty, rear-wheel drive based Zeta platform to General Motors’ E2XX architecture.
Holden has yet to reveal an on-sale date for the 2018 Commodore, but February of 2018 has been floated in previous reports surrounding the car. In North America, Buick will reveal the 2018 Regal and potentially the Regal TourX, a wagon variant, on April 4, 2017.
