NCM Highlights The 1988 Callaway Sledgehammer: Video

The National Corvette Museum is helping Callaway Cars to recognize 30 years of Corvette-based Callaways with a special exhibit. Naturally, it features 15 iconic Callaway Corvettes from the company’s history, and the NCM has highlighted a special one for us.

The 1988 Callaway Sledgehammer held a top speed record-smashing vehicle for 20 years with almost 900 hp. That was nearly double what a traditional Callaway twin-turbo Corvette was producing at the time.

Special intercoolers and manifold and a specific twin-turbo system helped make the Sledgehammer an iconic Corvette from Callaway.

Only one Callaway Sledgehammer exists and it’s sitting in the National Corvette Museum for all to gawk at. If you can’t make it, check out the video above to grab a closer look.

  1. In my childhood i had a sticker album with this Sledge Corvette, and was amazed; the most spectacular and faster Corvette that ever exists.

    408 km/h ( 254 mph ) in 1988, oh my god……….

  2. I got to know John Lingenfelter who built the engine and drove to the record.

He had plans to go to 300 mph but they never did get to it.

He later built a Corvette for his own company that did a street legal 230 mph. It was said then the could go faster. I asked John if he ever would and he said no. They were on street tires and no cage. He said if he lost a tire there would be little left of him or the car.

He then turned to a AWD GMC Sonoma with a TT turbo in it. It was doing street legal 9 second runs. He was hurt in an accident and later died from a medical issue. It was a real loss as he loved cars so Much and did so much for racing few ever realized.
