The GM Authority Take

America’s ravenous hunger for crossover utility vehicles appears to have taken its toll on the Sonic family, which is a segment leader in many ways. As such, we expect Sonic sales to continue sliding, while Chevy crossover sales including the Trax, Equinox, and Traverse continue to grow, at least until the crossover craze comes to a halt.

  1. i’d consider it IF they offered AWD and maybe a rear pickup / micro pickup bed option.

  2. I’m not so sure that the blame lies with the CUV sales. Compare the sales of the adjacent sized vehicles. The Spark is newer and had an increase in sales which probably siphoned off a few (not too many admittedly). The Cruze is new and also offers a hatchback and diesel, selling over 6500 more units in Jan 2017 vs. 2016. I think the Cruze hatch is a bigger factor in lower Sonic sales than any increase in CUV sales. Considering the Spark and Cruze are newer with the Sonic going 8 years now with a minor facelift (a refresh that muted many endearing styling cues). There is also the Bolt EV.

Contrast that with the Chevy CUV numbers. The Trax improved over 2016 and could have drained some Sonic sales, but the Equinox sales dropped and the Traverse markets to a different demographic than Sonic customers. I think the Cruze is the biggest reason for the Sonic drop.

Alex, I almost always find your posts well thought out and informative, but I’m going to have to disagree this time.

  4. Cheaply made, irratic turbo , wonky transmissions, and OVERPRICED for anything that looks decent.
