Chevy Express Sales Climb 48.4 Percent To 4,322 Units In January 2017

Chevrolet Express deliveries in the United States totaled 4,322 units in January 2017, a substantial increase of 48.4 percent compared to 2,913 units sold in January 2016.

In Canada, Express sales totaled 213 units in January 2017, a decrease of 19 percent compared to 263 units sold in January 2016.

The GM Authority Take
GM tells us that the spike in sales was “part of a comprehensive go-to-market strategy for the month”… though something tells us that production of the vehicle at Navistar has resulted in increased availability (supply) of the vehicle. We’ll try to confirm this suspicion, and will update this GMA Take if (or when) we do.

Not sure what’s happening in European van market, once there was Vivaro & Traffic twin vans to which although us GM fans weren’t happy we was told it was the only way & sort of accepted this. Now we have four manufactures selling the same van because along with Renault, Recently Fiat & now Nissan all sell the same van. Why the need for four manufactures (five if you count Opel) to sell the same van is awkward.
At first I thought your introducing FIAT is an error on your part. But I have to admit that it was me who had a lapse of knowledge. Thanks for the challenge which got me to learn something new (to me).
You are right, the current FIAT Talento comes from the same source as the Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro.
This results from FIAT withdrawing from the cooperation with PSA in SEVEL Nord, where they produced the second European answer to the Chrysler Voyager, the “Eurovan” marketed as Peugeot 806, Citroën Evasion, Fiat Ulysse und Lancia Zeta, together with commercial versions as Peugeot Expert, Citroën Jumpy und Fiat Scudo, the commercial ones as van with two body heights and lengths and other variations.
After FIAT went together with Chrysler, in 2012 FIAT severed the PSA-FIAT alliance for SEVEL Nord, and introduced instead the Chrysler Voyager as Lancia Voyager. The FIAT Scudo continued to be produced at SEVEL Nord until 2016, when it was replaced by a version of the Renault Trafic/Opel Vivaro named again FIAT Talento. The Nissan version was orginally called Primastar, but I heard that it is now called NV300.
But when Opel is actually sold to PSA, the next generation Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro might be a version of the Peugeot Expert and Citroën Jumpy.
GM’s last proper van IMO the Bedford CF (nothing until now has come close) yes Vivaro & Movano are modern day equlivants even if shared with Renault. I hope there won’t be a GM/PSA joint van but it looks likely there will be. It wouldn’t be so bad if they could partner a manufacture & make it last rather than keep changing to different firms. The small van I guess you was thinking of first Observer 7 was the Combo to which is shared with Fiat as the Doblo which is also sold as a car variant (although any manufactures with vans sold as cars (Citroen, Fiat, Ford, Peugoet to name a few)) I refuse to accept them as cars, so for example Fiats range consists of Panda, 500, Tipo, 124. I feel it can harm a manufactures image selling what is essentially the same product as what’s being sold in a rival manufactures showroom down the road.
The medium van Citroen, Peugoet, Fiat & Toyota make has just recently been replaced by a new one by Citroen, Peugoet & Toyota. It seems a little smaller than Vivaro (although I haven’t seen any about) it’s possibly smaller due to MPV car versions being sold of this van (again I don’t count this as a car so Citroens range is C1, C3, C4 & Piccasso) with the fact this is a new van & bearing in mind it’s smaller or appears to be than Vivaro I’m guessing any (IF) replacement is long term away.

BTW, the third PSA-Opel cooperation project after Crossland and Grandland is a smaller LCV, I think a successor of Citroën Berlingo/Peugeot Partner, similar to the Renault Kangoo/Nissan Kubistar, a “Hochdachkombi” or what what english Wikipedia calls a Leisure Activity Vehicle ( en.wikipedia .org/wiki/Leisure_activity_vehicle)

Observer 7, yes I was thinking Vivaro too. Worryingly for some there’s not a single PSA car, van or bike that would get me into one of their showrooms let alone buy one. With regards the very small van PSA partnered with Fiat id be surprised if it is ever replaced, I’d doubt there’s a market for it, it is very small. It is however getting long in the tooth now yet I feel the shared van GM & PSA would replace is the Combo, Partner/ Berlongo (the former based on the pre facelifted Doblo), if anything there’s a small possibility of a swb version of this van such as Renault do with Kangoo but I doubt it will be directly replaced.
That’s how vans should be, built to have a lifespan of 20 years like they used to be. You buy a van for it to shift stuff, it just needs to be a box based on old tried & tested technology, it’s not like a car where 0-60 times, top end speed & luxury are bragging points – it’s just about shifting stuff. We in Europe should get back to building vans with a 20 year lifespan instead of designing vans to have car lifespans & replaced every 8 years, then we wouldn’t need to join up with rival manufactures to produce the same van. We also wouldn’t need to sell vans as cars to generate more income. Keep cars as cars & vans as vans.
Navistar is not producing any vans yet.
But Navistar might, after VW took 16.6% of Navistar’s capital, import the VW Crafter as and sell it in North America as e.g. the Navistar Crafter.
VW Crafter will shortly be no longer an OEM version of the Mercedes Sprinter (which is sold in USA under the Mercedes and Freightliner brands), since VW had decided to end the cooperation with Mercedes on this truck and is developing its own, and is building a factory for it in Poland.
FCA also sells their FIAT Ducato, or rather a “federalized” version of it, in the US under the RAM brand.
Making a van to last 20 years is great, but GM is falling behind everyone else in the full size van market and they need to upgrade theirs to keep up with all of the other van makers. I am a loyal GM owner, but if I needed a full-size van, I wouldn’t buy the current design by GM. I would have to look elsewhere.
