The GM Authority Take

At first glance, the 3,883 deliveries of the XT5 in January appear to be concerning when compared to the much higher sales figures of the last two months of 2016. Looking at crossover’s direct competitors, however, shows that the (front-drive-based) midsize luxury crossover segment appears to be down as a whole, with Lexus RX deliveries decreasing 14.4 percent to 5,081 units and Acura MDX deliveries falling 8.4 percent to 3,274 units.

Hence, the XT5’s sales performance doesn’t appear to be that bad, as it is only second to the segment’s perennial best-seller, the Lexus RX. However, it’s worth noting that Lincoln MKX sales increased 43 percent to 2,928 units.

  1. And the GMA take on this is …….? Again, when a CUV has a decrease we hear crickets in the background but when its a sedan its because of what hot sellers CUVs are and people are moving away from sedans. Why is there such a huge decerese from December and November for the XT5? Just curious.

    1. Dan — the article has been updated with my GMA take. Sometimes, the take makes it into the article after being published.

It really hurts to hear your aggression and anger. Can you keep it down, if only just a little? 😉

      1. Much better Alex, thanks :). Its not anger as much as frustration that an industry that i love is being watered down with soccer mom CUVs and SUVs and big large sedans that I grew up with are becoming extinct. I just hope that the CUV craze is nothing more then that, a craze. And lets hope that the auto industry dose not abandon sedans altogether

        1. I completely understand the crossover sentiment. The sad part is that Cadillac has totally botched its crossover strategy.

It could be making exciting, highly-desirable crossovers that truly carry the sport luxury principles of the Cadillac brand, much like the offerings from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati. Instead, Cadillac chose to take the easy way out with nose-heavy CUVs that have zero sporting intentions… and would probably be better off as Buicks (in reference to the XT5 and the upcoming XT3 and XT7).

        2. Theoriginaldan,

For a while it seemed the mini-van was going to take over the world. Everybody built one and everyone wanted to own one. GM built them for all their divisions save Cadillac. Now, they’re only purchased by those who truly need their undeniable function and GM builds none. I expect the crossover craze to wane too. They’ll likely always be around but not as popular.

  2. So here’s a question – what’s driving the Lincoln MKX sales upward? Halo effect from the Continental? The Matthew McConaughey commercials are that good? Cadillac’s marketing still isn’t hitting the mark?

    1. The MKX percentage change figure for Jan 2017 / Jan 2016 is inflated, since the crossover saw limited availability in January 2016. So it’s not a matter of sales being driven by anything so much as sales coming into the “normal” levels from depressed levels in January 2016.

Here is the MKX sales chart to illustrate what I mean:

Other than that, the MKX has some healthy incentives on it, particularly when it comes to leasing. Ford/Lincoln Credit is really subsidizing it, while also offering a $500 incentive on every MKX purchase.

      1. Thanks Alex! You’re right – I just checked the website of a local Lincoln dealership and they’re putting $5,000+ dollars on the hood of the MKXs right on their website. Honestly I’d be tempted to test drive one – it comes across as a good bargain.

  3. I read an article recently that did a direct comparison between the MKX and XT5 and it was quit interesting . The MKX fared much better than I would have thought . It claimed it was much quieter , the engine more refined and the fit and finish of the interior was better .
And the biggest fault of the XT5 was ” CUE ” and the lack of buttons ( switches ) for the radio and the Navigation system . However that is subjective at best , some customers want them and others like the dash less cluttered .
There are so many CUV / SUV’s in this segment that customers have no loyalty to any specific brand anymore . When the SRX came out in 2009 as a 2010 the segment wasn’t as crowded as it is now . I’m not so sure we will see the same sales numbers with the XT5 that the SRX enjoyed for so many years .
Winter months are typically slow , did that hurt sales maybe . And there is always going to be the exception as we see in the numbers for the MKX . I wouldn’t be to concerned right now and wait for the spring selling season to watch monthly sales numbers .

    1. I’ve sat in a few Lincolns at car shows – the interiors are very nice and I’m partial to real buttons. Also, I didn’t realize until seeing a recent review on the MKX that they come with Ford’s 3.3 Turbo V6. Caddy can’t get the LGW into the rest of their lineup (really ATS and XT5) fast enough.

      1. Agreed about getting the LGW into the XT5 ASAP… should enable even-higher ATPs for the model and for the brand.

Unfortunately, the LGW won’t ever make it into the ATS unless something changes and the current model remains on the market for longer than expected… which shouldn’t be that long.

  4. New diesel engine, new 9 speed automatic transaxle, New full plug in hybrid system, New CUE system all coming up. These LGW 3.0-liter v6 engine most likely will come as well, CT3-V will have a small v8 engine. Cadillac’s crossovers/SUV’s will get a new diesel engine, four and six cylinders.

  5. those fat and stubby, CUVs….I hate em really hate em.

  6. Well we will get the XT3 soon and the XT7 with three rows by fall. It will be interesting to see where it goes from there.

The Cadillac rep was talking these models up more than the XT5.

    1. Hopefully, if goes in the direction of “Daring Greatly” by not making nicer clones of existing GM crossovers.

  7. I like the XT5. In fact I purchased two of them. One for the wife and one for myself. We purchased the vehicles in 2016. When I compared the XT5 to the Mercedes M class, the XT5 won overwhelmingly. The XT5 is much more agile, faster, responsive, and fun to drive than the M class. My only negative is Cadillac should make things like Driver Awareness Package and the Cadillac CUE Information and Media Control System with Embedded Navigation standard on all its XT5.
