Global Cadillac Sales Up 44.2 Percent To 29,764 Units In January 2017

Global sales of new Cadillac vehicles totaled 29,764 units in January 2017, an increase of 44.2 percent year-over-year, marking the eighth consecutive month of double-digit percentage increases for the brand.

“Cadillac begins 2017 with a continuation of the robust global growth of 2016, a year in which we sold more products worldwide than any point in the past three decades,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “We are growing the business significantly and attracting a youthful and affluent demographic, elevating the aspirational character of the brand. This is particularly the case in China, where our growth is explosive and sustained.”

January 2017 Cadillac Sales By Model

As opposed to several months in 2016, Cadillac did not provide sales on a per-model basis in January. It did, however, provide the following highlights:

  • Sales of the new XT5 midsize crossover increased 51.7 percent year-over-year to 11,880 units
  • Sales of the ATS sport sedan and coupe family increased 63.8 percent
  • Sales of the XTS luxury sedan increased 29.3 percent

January 2017 Cadillac Sales By Market

Cadillac sales rose in three global markets in January, including a sharp increase in China as well as slight growth in the Middle East. Sales volume fell in the United States and in Canada. It is worth noting that, unlike in the first 10 months of 2016, Cadillac did not provide individual sales figures for Mexico, Europe and South Korea; instead, it bundles sales from those countries in the single ROW (Rest of World) line item.

January 2017 Cadillac sales summary by market versus January 2016:

  • Cadillac sales in the United States decreased 4.1 percent to 10,298 units due to a reduction in sales to commercial fleet customers; Cadillac retail sales increased 1.2 percent in January 2017
  • Cadillac sales in China increased 116 percent to 18,011 units, representing a January sales record for the brand in the market
  • Cadillac sales in Canada decreased 19 percent to 657 units
  • Cadillac sales in the Middle East increased 1.4 percent to 293 units
  • Cadillac sales in all other regions (ROW, or Rest of World) increased 10 percent to 505 units

  1. Wow. Really strong month.
The Chinese market is showing tremendous growth that should continue the remainder of the year with CT6 and XT5 reaching full availability.

I thought the Chinese market would overtake the US market by 2018 but it could happen this year.

The new models from Cadillac can not come fast enough.

  2. I think most of today’s Cadillacs are boring….thats why Cadillac is a bigger success in China.

    1. TheY sell the exact same cars there as here so what’s your point?

    2. You keep repeating the same thing over and over and others keep telling you that your subjective opinion on Cadillac’s styling (itself a subjective matter) does not line up with the overall market sentiment.

To repeat what has been stated to you over and over and over again: real-world sentiment/opinion of Cadillac’s current styling/design language is extremely positive. It’s actually Cadillac’s biggest advantage, since it is instantly recognizable… whereas the design language of Caddy’s German competitors is not. To note, I’m not stating this as an opinion, but rather as a summary of what I have learned after being in this industry in retail/Tier 3 and corporate/Tier 1 for many years, and having worked at GM itself.

To continue, Cadillac’s biggest disadvantage right now is its brand image. When the logos are removed from vehicles in clinics, people love the Cadillacs *on design alone*. When the logos are put back on, they tend to gravitate towards the German brands.

  3. my point is that Cadillacs appeal to the Chinese more than they appeal to the Americans….as Ameicans are complaning about cheap materials and too much hard plastic inside and out and the styling being boring…..thay want Elmeraj and Ceil concepts to be built but sadly they toned down the styling for Chinese tastes and all we got is a bigger CTS with hard plastic.

    1. What “hard plastic” are you referring to, Rye? What “cheap materials” are you talking about?

Do you have any real, quantitative evidence that people “want Elmiraj and Ciel” concepts?

  4. Big American luxury brands like Cadillac and Buick are hot cachet in China for a simple reason, to successful Chinese businessmen, anything”American” equates success. And you can’t get more quintessential in American brashness than driving around in a big bad Cadillac or Buick. Buick is akin to China what the German brands are here in the USA. Check out YouTube for Chinese car reviews, they’re doing mostly the Caddy/Buick stuff. Marketing and perception is everything. Unfortunately for our homegrown luxo brands, the illusion for Mercedes and BMW have become real here in the USA. I applaud the Chinese for recognizing the value in American brands.

    1. Korea used to be the same way (US=success) in the 80s & 90s, but never in cars as there were next to no import cars of any kind here then.

Today, imports account for about 15% of the market.

      The best sellers are:
      1. MB 56,343 units (25%)
      2. BMW 48, 459 units (22%)
      3. Audi 16,718 units (7%)
      4. VW 13,178 units (6%)
      5. Ford/Lincoln 11,200 (5%)

  5. I’m a Cadillac owner in Korea and can shed some light on Caddy sales here.

    January 2017: 80 units (+63% over 49 units in Jan. 2016)

    By model:
    CT6: 38 units (48%)
    XT5: 26 units (33%)
    CTS: 9 units (11%) [-39% from 2016]
    ATS: 5 units (6%) [-77% from 2016]
    ATS-V: 1 unit (1%)
    CTS-V: 1 unit (1%)

Cadillac sold 1,102 units in Korea in all of 2016, up 24% over the 886 units sold in 2015.

  6. Global sales were up for 2016 , however Cadillac sales for January were down 4.1% here in the States and GM sales were down 24% in China . Not the best way to start the year , XT5 sales are gaining momentum but the CT6 is still lagging behind the XTS . People say that sales of all luxury cars are flat because of SUV’s but the XTS is a luxury car and it selling better than Cadillacs flagship model . There is a problem there .
Cadillac needs to get their crossovers to market they have 2 while other brands are selling several types . One I hope is a small Escalade , they would sell thousands of them if they had the same type of style . And Mercedes is set to bring to market a new ” wagon ” in the ’18 MY .
If Buick is going to rebadge that Opal into a sport wagon Cadillac may want to thin about their own version .
Other Brands are flooding the market with their style of Crossovers and are eating up the segment , when we do finally get models from Cadillac will there be any space left in the market ? Their vehicles will be coming to market as vehicle sales start to slow if you believe what most analyist’s are saying .

  7. its funny how even outside the US, XTS sales are up. Personally I loved the design of the 2004-09 SRX, if cadillac wanted an easy money maker, they could take this design/platform and tweak it to look like a mini escalade. Boom, they have a 3 row CUV and a great looking car.

  8. the XTS is outselling the CT6 because the XTS is more roomy and has a more plush ride than the CT6…..it would be nice if Cadillac has a big plush riding RWD flagship that doesn’t feel too harsh in the ride.

    1. Have you ever driven or been driven in an XTS or a CT6… or any other Cadillac for that matter?

  9. Who says that Cadillac should go back to the days of a couch on wheels? NOT ME! My XTS AWD VSPORT 410HP magnetic shocks car which gets BETTER mileage than the CTS DI AWD car I previously owned shows Cadillac is leading the way, without the breakdowns of BMW and MB. Now if CUE was revised, it would be perfect! I certainly do NOT want a RWD car. Back to the 1980’s? NOT ME!
