Cadillac CT6 Deliveries Total 634 Units In January 2017

The Cadillac CT6 full-size prestige luxury sedan accounted for 634 deliveries in the United States in January 2017, its eleventh full month on sale in the U.S. market.

The figures compare to 1,293 U.S. deliveries in December, 1,169 in November, and 1,316 in October. Since commencing sales in March 2016, the CT6 has accounted for 9,803 cumulative deliveries in the United States through January 2017.

Based on a high-tech, modern and lightweight rear-drive architecture labeled as the Omega platform, the CT6 is the first Cadillac model ever to compete in the full-size luxury flagship sedan space that has been defined by such segment stalwarts as the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8/S8, and Lexus LS.

The GM Authority Take

We can already hear some of you jumping in out of your shoes to swiftly (and very incorrectly) conclude that this sales report points to a definitive win for Cadillacs on front-wheel-drive architectures (such as the XTS). In concluding that, you would, in fact, be erring in a highly indecorous fashion. As such, we would like to take this moment to bring some level-headed reasoning.

Rather than a battle between FWD and RWD, what the CT6’s January sales performance is all about is customers favoring crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) at the expense of sedans such as the CT6. We can conclude this by examining the full-size, prestige-luxury sedan segment as a whole: to wit, every single full-size, prestige-luxury sedan posted a sales volume decline in January. That’s right… every single one — from the vaunted Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the BMW 7 Series to the Audi A8 and Lexus LS. All of them posted a sales decrease in January.

U.S. January 2017 Full-Size Luxury Sedan Sales Overview
Model January 2017 Deliveries January 2016 Deliveries January 2017 / January 2016
Mercedes-Benz S-Class* 1,212 1,277 -5.1%
BMW 7 Series 545 846 -35.7%
Audi A8 254 345 -26.4%
Lexus LS 280 397 -29.5%
*Includes S-Class Sedan and S-Class Coupe

The numbers tell this story without any words, yet we would like to state for the sake of the narrative that the CT6’s January 2017 sales volume has little to do with what wheels are responsible for propelling the vehicle forward. Instead, it’s all about crossovers taking sales from the full-size sedan segment. So then, “Why didn’t Cadillac XTS sales decrease during the same month“, you might ask? And ask you should.

As mentioned previously, there are three primary reasons for XTS sales being relative steady in January, including:

  1. The XTS’ relatively affordable price when compared to the CT6, as the two vehicles are roughly $10,000 apart in starting price.
  2. An established and loyal customer base for the XTS, one that is not sensitive to the latest market trends like switching to crossovers from sedans.
  3. Steady XTS sales to fleet and livery customers, to whom the CT6 is not available.

  1. Francisco, would you happen to know how many units of the Lincoln Continental were sold last month, compared to the CT6?

      1. I’m thinking the Continental is more aimed, basically directly, at the XTS. The pricing is pretty much exact. However, anyone purchasing either of those, will cross-shop several large American sedans, including the CT6. I do love the Continental and I think it’s p. slick. I haven’t seen a Continental out in the wild, yet. I an’t wait to see one.

        1. Yoshiaki is correct: the Continental is a direct competitor to the XTS, not the CT6.

The lower price and higher content levels of the Conti and XTS will generally result in higher sales volumes of both models.

And though the full-size, prestige-luxury sedan space of the S-Class, 7 Series and CT6 does not represent significant sales volume, boy does it deliver huge profit margins and all kinds of positive effects for the brand, including image, equity, and cachet.

Cadillac can continue to do well by offering both the XTS for positive volume + profit impact and the CT6 for positive volume + profit + brand cachet impact.

  2. Even if sales decreased ,cadillac sold more ct6’s than BMW, lexus and Audi rivals….

    1. This is true. However, the CT6 also has the lowest starting price among the MB, BMW, Audi and Lexus thanks to the availability of the 2.0T engine… so cumulative sales volume should be higher for it than the others.

  3. I assume that FWD cars sell and RWD cars doent sell.

    Reply
    1. You assume wrong.

Every car in the table above except for Audi A8 is RWD.

So once again, you are purely and completely incorrect.

  4. This just tells me that GM needs another unit on this platform to spread the cost. Perhaps a new Chevrolet model to take place of the SS. Chevrolet level content with the LT1 sounds just about right to me.

  5. I’m a car enthusiast, and even I can’t keep Cadillac models straight; I thought this was one of the FWD models. Grrrrrr…..can we please go back to naming our cars with Great Names instead of F-ing alphanumeric soup? The most presigious Cadillac has a name, Escalade. So why not give this awesome looking car an awesome name? Fleetwood, for example? OK, don’t reach to the past if you don’t want; but think of something better than ct6.

Create some F-ing buzz, for God’s sake!!!

    1. So something about the CT6 name suggested to you that the car is FWD? That’s rather peculiar.

The only FWD sedan in Cadillac’s lineup is the XTS. And once the others (ATS, CTS) get the new naming scheme, it will be very easy to figure out which one is which based on the number following CT. Seems very simple to me.

      1. Honestly, if you are a car enthusiast, as you say you are, then you sound know that the CT6 is particularly special, since it serves as the introductory vehicle for GM’s advanced Omega platform, a platform that is RWD/AWD. It’s this platform that allows the CT6 to be so incredible light, much lighter than its direct competitors. 🙂

  6. Your comparison of sales declines for other large luxury sedans was particularly effective in putting the low CT6 January sales numbers in perspective!

  7. If the number of Cadillac CT6 sales in China is reported here, how many were the plug-in hybrid version? When will the U.S. market get that model?

  8. Ok , so the CT6 isn’t selling as well as it should because of the SUV mania in the country right now . And the XTS continues to out sell it almost every month , which may very well be because of the price difference of $10,000 dollars . The XTS is more ” Cadillac ” than the CT6 is . Even a highly regarded show ” Motor Week ” has said that Cadillac is going in a different direction with their new flagship and it may turn off some of the divisions loyal following with the CT6’s driving dynamics . Customers are not looking for a luxo-barge that floats down the highway like in years past but they do appreciate the softer ride of the XTS.
It’s also not fair to the car to compare it to an S-Class or any high luxury German brand , when it’s a fact that the CT6 is not a true competitor and that came from JDN months ago . It was the now defunct CT8 that was to compete .
Really it does come down to the price , you do get alot for your money even buying the Platinum 6 , but it seriously is not up to the standards of the top tier German luxury cars . It’s in fact a tweener , better than the XTS and Lincoln Continental but not quite up to the standards to get the top tier star .
Cadillac needs those SUV’s badly , however they still need that true luxury car that they have always been famous for and I would hope that the CT8’s development has just slowed and not put in mothballs. That would do more to help in their re-building their image than 4 or 5 new SUV’s ever will .

  9. I think they should leave the RWD platforms to 2-door sports cars and 2-seaters and develop Caddys own high-end FWD platform for there future flagship sedans that are BIG, BOLD, SOFT RIDING and POWERFULL…..NOT hard riding German wannabees..

a high-end FWD platform that would underpin.
    a 2nd generation XTS….$50.000~
    a flagship above the XTS….$90.000~
